Hi
Well after the change of diet we have stopped the crib biting completely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so happy..... but........
he is still itching so now am looking at taking off Alfa A. What experience does anyone have of Alfa A free chsffs, bearing in mind he is only just 2, is a shire so need quantity, and is also a pretty poor doorer ATM, hence the alfa a in the first place. Have been lookinging at molichaff, readigrass, just grass and graze on. I am alos avoiding sugar and cereal. Any thoughts?

My alfalfa-allergic cob (comes out in lumps, dandruff and chronic itching if given alfalfa) is fed Mollichaff ShowShine which is purported to be high-oil and low-sugar.

It's just chopped oat straw coated in soya oil and flavouring.

Safe & Sound chaff is alfalfa free and has all the vits & mins included. No prob feeding quantity - its safe for laminitics too. Readygrass is good - can put on weight though, and Fast Fibre is good if you want to bulk up the fibre quota.

I did not realise people had itchy horses because of Alfalfa. My horse is always itchy. I will try taking that out of the diet and see if it makes a difference.

Hi, thanks for the replies. Yes i am trying brewers yeast, does it work for you? How long did it take?

Long story short my 23 month old shire has always liked a good itch but one night last August he rubbed his whole mane away in 12 hours! Plus he also started cirb biting. He was then being fed, HIFI, Alfa A and Level grow mix. After lots of research into the fact that crib biting can be due to diet, think he is sugar and cereal intolerant (due to elimination), put him on an exclusion diet of just Alfa A for one week (at the time i hadn't read about itching) the gradually added to make he new diet of HIFI ALFA A, micronised linsead, Herbal health (which is a blend of seaweed, rosehips and spearmint) plus biotin as he is young, and brewer yeast. His crib biting has stopped completely (within 3 weeks) and he is just generally happier, everyone has noticed. Although the itching isn't as bad, but might just be because it is so cold as 1 mild day we had last week he itch on a tree for ages! so think it's worth taking away the Alfalfa to see. I'm just concerned he will loose even more weight, the only reason i was feeding mix and Alfa A in the first place!
Sorry that wasn't quite so short!
