I'm 5ft2, 9st and have a 16.3hh well built tb I have had comments in the past but I can handle and ride her absolutely fine and have done for the last 3 years so if you feel happy then just ignore them and carry on
maybe im just getting old but when we used to talk about someone being over horsed it had nothing to do with height of rider or horse.. it was to do with the fact that the rider could not control horse etc, horse was too much for rider, so do you feel in control happy etc on your horse if so it shouldn't matter what height you are
Yeah that's what I would think over-horsed means too, lack of control.
People sticking their noses in where they're not wanted it sounds like! If you can control your horse and you're happy then who cares, 15.2 isn't even that big, if it was 18hh and you couldn't reach to put a saddle on there would be practical issues of course!
I'm 5'2 on my tippytoes, and I now ride a true heavyweight cob type who's 15.3hh. He's an utter dude, and although I only ride in my holidays and even then rarely he looks after me perfectly. His proper rider is even shorter than I am!
This is me on him... He's awesome, and I am 100% not overhorsed!
As everyone else has said, 'overhorse' shouldn't refer to height/size. Provided you feel comfortable and in control then that is all that matters and you can just ignore anyone who says otherwise.
FWIW, I'm just barely 5'6 and incredibly slight, but have been riding a 17.2 hunter built like a brick house and he's a complete BFG, one of the most well-mannered horses I've ridden.
People tell me my horse is mans horse!
He's amazing and although on occasion I think smaller is easier I can also let my 13 yr old hack him alone on the roads and know bar being spooky they will be absolutely fine. He's far safer and easier than our 15.2 and 14.3 so if you feel good on him and your in control who cares what people say.
When I was looking for a new horse 5 years ago I was talked into trying a 16.3hh X ID, I had never wanted such a big horse but the moment I got on her I felt totally relaxed and she was a dream to ride. Unfortunately due to her height I couldn't fit her in my stables. I ended up buying my 15.2hh Welsh D and he is far more of a handful than the mare so it is definitely a case of being able to ride the animal regardless of the size of the horse. I am 5"3in and the owner of the 16.3hh was under 5".
