Hi,
I have had some problems with my mare this weekend. I have owned her for a year - I am not a confident rider but we have got on great hacking and flatwork lessons - she is a lively but safe ride and having kept in touch with her last owner who had her for 10 yrs I know that shes never bucked or reared.

I have done alot of lunging and riding with her over the hols. On Tuesday she was backing off my leg in the school and didnt feel 100%. She was hacked out fine on Thursday and on Fri gave a friend her first ever ride walking and trotting in the school for half hr no problems.

Yesterday my usual instructor came for a lesson and as I had concerns about how she had gone on Tuesday with me she hopped on first - she said she felt very tight and worked her for about 40 mins in trot with some canter work she eventually worked well but started to give a little flick with her back legs in trot - they did some canter work and she worked well but then threw in a few big bucks - this mare has never bucked under saddle in her life.

I had a saddle fitter out on Xmas Eve and tried a saddle but she was in her original tack yesterday and I had the back man out Xmas week who gave her the all clear.

She did appear to be starting a season on Fri night whinneying and spraying - she hasnt had 1 since Oct but last yr her first one in Mar and last one in Oct were both strong - in season shes always on her toes but no bucking etc.

The other thing I have noticed is her stable bed has been bone dry for a week and a half but shes drinking in the stable and field - a friend told me today her mare was the same not wanting to go forwards and not passing water so she put her on Global Herbs eazi pee and she improved.

I wanted opinions - do you think the season/bladder issue could be the cause - I dont know why she would be having a season now and it isnt very strong - I poo picked her field today and watched her for about an hr she kept cocking her tail but nothing was happening - she is eating fine and plenty of poos!

Any ideas guys??? She can be moody and is sometimes marish but the bucking is totally out of charactor and I feel there must be a good reason for her behaving this way!

Hi Ziggy,

Thanks - i have rung the vet and they are coming on Wed so hopefully get to the bottom of it.

Agree I would be worried about kidneys too. Or perhaps she could have a bladder infection, I don't know, I am not a vet but I would be tempted to get him sooner than Wednesday if you can.

Is she showing any colicy type symptoms?

I know Im particularly paranoid about kidneys having lost one to kidney failure - as a result I am probably over reacting massively so take what I am saying with a huge pinch of salt!

A horse not going to the loo is not good IMO the first time my horse would of had a dry bed i would have been o the phone to vets the second i discovered it and demand they come out that day.
One of the liveries on our yard died a horrid, painful death due to kidney failure the owners refused to aknowledge.

Sorry if im coming across as harsh but i would be damanding the vets come tomorrow as this could be serious, infact im shocked the vets are prepared to leave it until wednesday.

My mare will only pee in her stable if kept in for very long periods, if she is on her normal routine coming in at 4pm and being turned out at 8am she will pee as soon as she goes out!

Her stable is rarely wet - a dream to keep tidy - I appreciate this is unusual.
