Dylan has started drooling excessively this afternoon. All normal this am, went for a walk & play with IWS down the road, nothing strange. Came home & had tripe meal, no problems.

He has since been in the house asleep while I've been busy. Just sat down beside him & the cushion & throw he's been on are wet & he is drooling out of the left hand side of his mouth, almost continous dripping of clear liquid. He doesn't appear to be in any pain & is bright enough in himself. I can't see anything in his mouth. Not drinking excessively.

I'll probably ring the vets in a minute, but any ideas?

Vets, could be something like a simple sting or licked a toad but could be more sinister, excessive drooling can be a symptom of lots of things. Hope he's bitten on a bee or something! x

Thanks Vizzy.

Just got back from the vets. No obvious cause, nothing in mouth, no sensitivity in stomach, no retching, anal glands clear, temperature & heart rate normal.

Gave him an anti-biotic & anti-inflamatory just in case.

Worrying not knowing what the cause is, but he seems fine in himself & has just done a normal pooh, so I'm hoping it's nothing too serious.

Might have been over keen to have gone to the vets (OH not impressed as tea is going to be late tonight), but it's a long night when you're worried & the vets are half hour drive away which I didn't want to be doing as an emergency at silly o'clock if I had the chance to do something about it beforehand.

Glad it doesn't seem to be anything serious. I'm a bit like you in that I sometimes tend to go (or at least speak) to the vet sooner rather than later, as you say its always preferable to go before it becomes an emergency imho.

My rotti drools sometimes (the first time I thought bloat) and freaked out, but she does it frequently, sometimes when she wants to make herself sick she does it and sometimes smacks her lips about, i usually let her in the garden to eat some grass she then pukes and is back to normal.
Other things like, foreign object in mouth, roof of mouth, or a sting in or around the mouth, or tooth ache.

Always better to be safe than sorry if you are worried, glad they didnt find anything alarming...I bet he licked a toad! :p
My vets are half hour away as well, I never take a risk with something that potentially could turn serious if left. Had he been about to bloat for example you would have arrived at vets in nick of time. Glad he seems ok :)

OP I've had exactly the same symptoms as you with my lab, and again like you galloped to the vet... Who in turn found nothing???
He checked for twigs, cuts, broken tooth and blocked salivary glands - nothing!!!
We've had the same symptoms 2 more times whens she gets hold of a decent stick and chomps on it, so we'll be going back to the vets soon to investigate her teeth more thoroughly as I suspect it's tooth sensitivity that isn't obvious when ... And I've looked carefully myself more than once, but I suspect sedation to get a decent look.
I also find the drooling has stopped by the following morning

Thanks very much guys.

The water feature finally stopped flowing late last night & everything is normal this morning. He had me worried for a while as he isn't a drooly dog at all, even when there's food around. Obviously i'll keep an eye on him for a while.

It could have been a toad as we do have a lot around here, but he doesn't normally play with them.

However, there were some what looked like small plum stones in his pooh this morning. Our plum trees finished ages ago, but there are a couple of sloe trees in the garden which he must be eating - he is a fruit nut & helps himself to all the fruit in the garden as it ripens (strawberries, black currants, gooseberries, apples, plums, runner beans, peas, broad beans - so any food really!). I wonder if that could have something to do with last night's problems. Sloes aren't exactly nice to eat, so maybe they sucked all the moisture out of him mouth & sent his saliva glands into overdrive ;-)

What an idiot. Anyone would think he was starving. I have to time feeding the ducks & chickens now as otherwise he tries to nick their corn & pellets!
