A comment from Henmeister the other day made me look back at pics of my two when I first got them from Greyhound Rescue West of England.

Flick then:

Now I think that Flick looks loads better, but I am really not sure whether Islay is too thin? She is the only greyhound I have seen who was fat when she was in rescue kennels (very stuffy around her neck and shoulders) but when she settled down with me and her weight changed she got incredibly ribby. I asked the vet a few times who said that some greyhounds are just like that, but does she look better with some more weight on her?

I don't think she looks too thin at all.
You can see all Otto's ribs (well you could if he wasn't a furry monster!) but the Vet thinks he is a perfect weight and I think if he got fat enough to cover his ribs he'd be too fat. I thin he just has a big rib cage

Islay looks so much healthier, her back end looks loads better and her coat is fab!
Flick just looks a darn sight happier

No she looks loads better now, well muscled and just covered enough and Flick looks fab, just right. I was told by a vet when I was concerned about one of mine that as long as the hair lies in a curve over their hip bones they're fine. If the hair stick out rather than lies over the bone then they could do with a bit more meat.

Well done with Flick!

Wouldn't say Islay looks too thin, you are supposed to be able to see the last 3 ribs on a greyhound when at correct weight - that's the saying!

This is one of our girls

What do you feed? One of ours is like a labrador and will eat anything and everything she see's (even tries to eat pig nuts/barley and sheep creep) whereas the one in the pic above isn't too fussed on biscuit foods, she likes raw, she's a bit fussy. Does Islay eat as much as Flick?

They both look signifigantly different in before and after.........for a start they have well pronounced muscles both front and back, they had no muscle what so ever before and their coats have completely changed, they where dull and thick before they are now shiney clearly you can see how diet, enviroment and exercise have changed their physique.

I would say your dogs are ideal for their breed.

I think they both look great, as others have said they have much better muscle tone now and their coats are totally different, particularly Islay. If my Evie didn't have a thick coat she would look quite ribby, but imo she is ideal weight (29 kg) for a shepherd of her age.

Awwww thanks everyone - phew
grin.gif
This honestly wasnt a 'please agree with me or else' thread, I often wonder about Islay's weight, but when I have tried feeding her up she puts weight along her back and neck, not over her ribs!

Severnmiles your girl is lovely

Mine are both fed Skinners Duck and Rice, and their condition has noticeably improved since feeding it, even though they were on James Wellbeloved at twice the price before

Flick doesnt get as much as Islay as she is smaller, so she will get 2-2 1/2 cups twice a day whereas Islay has 2 1/2 - 3 cups twice a day. Amazingly Flick is now not too bothered about her food (having been an obsessive starvation case when I first had her) whereas Islay has eaten consistently well since I got her
smile.gif

I am now reassured though, thanks to everyone

Noooo of course Henmeister wasnt bullying me
grin.gif
Her original comment was that she couldnt believe how different Flick looked from when I first got her, which made me think I couldnt see a huge difference - until I looked at the pics of course!

The rest was just me being paranoid about my ickle doggies

I totally understand, we do have the same problem with Florimell, except I do think she is too thin. But it's almost impossible to put weight on her, she is sooo difficult, doesn't eat happily and invariably goes off her food after 2-3 days
shocked.gif
It doesn't help that most people who see her look at us in disgust with that 'why do you starve your dog' face

I had a whippet who was like that
frown.gif
So so fussy, I had to keep swapping to different food for her, it was a nightmare! Particularly since my other whippet ate like a horse and tended towards fatness

On another subject I do think Florimell is a lovely name
smile.gif
But you havent posted any pics of her yet I dont think? Would love to see some

I can throw in a free white spotty one if you like FB, she has been asleep and snoring all over me all evening

Normally I would say mini-greyhounds dont count, but I could make an exception for Florimell
smile.gif

YESSS I'd love Flick!! Actually... I am driving up to the UK the day after tomorrow (badly needed trip to RideAway

!!) so I could do a detour to pick her up, see some baby wild boars etc.

Or, even better...maybe I can become your sharer (dogs) and you can share Rauti

Mind you, the thought of sharing Rauti....hmmmm.....

Lol, don't worry, Glos. is probably slightly too far anyway considering I've got to do loads of stuff in one day (I have a ferry back the night after!)

But Rauti is always here, you're welcome to come ride him anytime
