I'd be grateful of any views on Sue Carson jump saddles - I've been told I should get one of these instead of the Devoucoux I was intending on getting. For a 16.1hh long backed, sensitive young event mare - Trakehner x id/tb. Thank you!

IME I would not touch with a very long bargepole. I had a complete nightmare with mine. The craftmanship was non existant to the point where the airbags moved (it ended up with all the airbags at the back of the saddle and nothing infront), even SC herself said the airbags didn't fit my model of saddle well, but they are a one size fits all kind of thing! My horse was crippled and needed to have over 8 months off and alot of physio work, all due to the above saddle. The memory of the pain he suffered has also left him difficult to put the saddle on and mount (2 years on).

I was one very unhappy customer, SC is very good at taking your money, but the aftercare is horrific, especially if you are having problems.

My good friend has a SC dressage saddle which I adore but she did also have some problems with the after sales service, one person that came to "refit" it left it totally lobsided! The only fitter who was any use has now left and is working for herself, she has always done a great job.

Bargepole - with - wouldn't - a - touch.

Rearrange the above words as you wish. A SC jump saddle crippled my horse.

Go with the Devoucoux and you will get a real saddle from a real saddle maker.

Also wouldn't touch them. The workmanship and quality is shocking, and soem of the fitting "solutions" I have seen have left me :o :o

Also, someone I know who was sponsered by them at one stage will now no longer use any air bagged saddles, and use another french make of saddle... make of that what you will ;)

We have a horse who is difficult to fit. He has big shoulders and is very wide. As a 4 yr old he had a Sue Carson dressage and Devecoux jumping saddle. We've now sold the Devoucoux which gave him back problems and got a Sue Carson jump saddle.
The dressage saddle is now 3 yr old, still looks like new ( in better condition than the Devoucoux which was same age) and we've never has any trouble with the saddle or after care. The horses back is better too and when we sell the horse the saddle will be adjusted to fit another.

I've had sue Carson and devoucoux out when I was looking for mine. Was very unimpressed with the sue Carson rep. I was a little more impressed by devocoux but 2/3 months down the line had real problems with it
and now wouldn't go anywhere near them. I sold it on
eBay and brought an Albion which I much muc prefer. Can't recommend their dressage or jumping saddle
enough- and much cheaper!!!

I was at a BE once and just browsing through different types of saddles (made it very clear we were looking to buy in the very near future) woman on stand said

"well, you can see the saddles we do but you might as well look in the brochure."

and that was it - walked away and would never contemplate one if they couldn't even be bothered to try to show me their product

Do a search on here.

I asked about them once - got so many negatives that I didn't bother going any further. Used an old Pembroke until horse had stopped growing and now have a Barnsby, which is extremely comfortable and horse seems happy with it :D

Friend has one, hated it. Workmanship poor had to get bits and bobs re stitched on numerous occasion ..!! She vowed never again.

Definitely a marmite saddle :) Personally I love them and my horse goes well in them. I have a jumping one, had a 2nd hand dressage one which I've now replaced with one of the new models.

I find the quality very good but like any saddle it's only as good as the fitter.

Heard lots of horror stories regarding the after sales service but upto now I've found them ok, had slight delay when my saddle went away to have a new airbag fitted but nothing major.

I'd certainly have a ride in one to see what you think, there are lots of negative posts on here but generally people are more vocal when they've got something to complain about, I'm sure they've got lots of statisfied customers as well.

I have both a Sue Carson jump and dressage saddle and have to say that I love them both. I agree that on here they do sound like marmite saddles. I have never had a problem getting them re fitted, although I always use Sue herself so cant comment on the other fitters. She has a hectic schedule but always manages to either come out to me within a week or I travel to her.
I think you have to take some of her comments with a pinch of salt, but I usually find horsey "experts" think they know everything and their way is always right.
I would say try one, have a good ride on it and use your own common sense and feel and you wont go far wrong.
I havent had the air bags move or any other problems, in fact mt ISH is much freer in the shoulder and over the back now.

I originally bought a GP saddle from Sue Carson saddles, however within a week it was tipping me alarmingly to one side. On further investigation it would seem the air bag had got a leak. Much arguing with -customer non service, and having been told that this can't happen, the rep (who has now left, bless her) came, saw what was wrong and took the saddle back. I then had a dressage saddle made to measure, as I am a shortie, and havent looked back. I had it refitted twice as the Spaniard can be a bit chunky at times!

however, the workmanship wasnt that good, which was a shame. I love the saddle I have as it fits me perfectly, and I have stayed in it despite the stunts, but I have to say I wouldnt buy another. My husband's bargain Barnsby is MUCH better made and finished.

I have a Leader jump saddle from Sue Carson and I ablsolutely love it! My horse has never gone so well. My has flair throughout the saddle but I think it is fantastic how Sue Carson Saddles can do flock as well. I have mine on a 3 yr old thoroughbred and as you all know they change shape so rapidly, the air is so simply adjusted so he has maxium comfort at all times. And I must say they look fabulous!!!

Flair can allow the saddle to move too much on some horses so be careful. I find Butet super to ride in and horses seem happy in them but, like anything, different makes suit different horses. I haven't had experience of the Devoucoux jumping saddle but have had no issues with my dressage saddle on a variety of horses. Discomfort is not always apparent on a one-off trial as the pressure is cumilative and can take time to change the horse's posture and action.
