Hi All

I have found a nice little suede 14" show saddle for my daughter and her new Sect A pony on ebay - I don't have a busting load of money so was thinking that rather than buying a leather GP for her now I would get a suede one - more sticky for little inexperienced bottoms.

We are hoping to do some M & M Leadrein classes next year so sort of thought that the saddle could do both the fun stuff and the showing stuff - am I being really tight here??

I love suede saddles, they also look lovely on ponies.

What make of saddle is it? I think the working hunter saddles are good for both jumping and look good for showing :)

Its new but an ebay special I believe.... Anybody else have any comments on leather vs suede and how on earth do you clean suede?

It only has a leather flap and back padding - sorry being a bit useless here with trying to describe the fact that there is no underflap - you know - the bit that the girth straps rest on so you lift up the flap and there is nothing underneath. Actually feel this might be a good thing because of small child legs flapping away over two flaps of leather might actually feel a bit like a tiny fly to a shaggy pony - therefore one less flap of leather might help with weak and feeble aids???

how much is it? I don't fancy the suede due to being difficult to clean and a pain if they get wet. I do think they look nice when they are new though.
I have a med 14'' leather one for sale that I used on my sec a. U nfortunatly he only wore it a few times before he took ill and was pretty much retired. It is a GP though. not sure of the shape of your pony but that's mine in the sig. not a show one though. Tbh, i sold the show one we had as it was too straight and had no knee rolls, i wanted something that would make son more secure.

Hi,

Do you mean a half panel?

I think the suede saddles look quite nice when they are a bit worn.

Sometimes you have to watch a saddle that is not marked as English leather, as it may be not if you were expecting that.

does the saddle you're buying have a make/brand? if not, i'd be very careful buying an unbranded saddle from eBay... you'd be better of getting a fitter out (explaining your budget over the phone before they came) to show you some second hand saddles. loads of fitters have a 2nd hand range.

also, suede is good/grippy... so, like you say better for inexperienced bottoms... but show saddles aren't designed for inexperienced bottoms... they're designed to show off the pony... and can be a bit 'wayhay' as they're usually flat with minimal knee/leg support... :)

good luck with the saddle hunting! :)
