Quite surprising which breeds are on Critical List
http://www.rbst.org.uk/watch-list/equines

A chance to support the Suffolk Punch breed with a family day out
http://www.suffolkpunchtrust.org/

The Trust will be holding an Open Day at the Stud in Hollesley on Sunday 2 August from 10am-4pm, entrance £5 per car, for visitors to see the 7 new foals and the other Suffolk Punch horses - 32 horses in total as well as displays of farm machinery and vehicles and rural craft displays.

Apologies for advertising--I know there are SP fans on here

How sad, cuffey

on the other side of the coin i have had an interesting chat on the phone this evening with someone who knows a "dealer" in the south of england that has offered to supply Comtois as a regular Meat Source direct from France.....they would come over here as weanlings, stay to plump up a bit, and then be dispatched.

it seems this interest in "franch rescue" may have taken a sinister wist...

That's very surprising news indeed. tell me how can Comtois foals be bought in France transported here then after fattening up be transported back and still be viable prices to go for meat !!!!!! sounds like someone is very deluded or pulling your leg

transported back where?

at a UK licenced Abattoir...so yes, very viable...and no, not pulling my leg at all, judging by how 8 of them weighed in last week...

very very profitable indeed...might have a little touch myself, TBH...

I knew about the ones on the critical list but didnt know about the endangered ones! I cant attend the open day as it is too far to go tbh. I may have to look out for a nice Dales mare to take me into my dotage!

A suffolk punch would be too big for me and an Eriskay too small! A cleveland bay might be ok though!

I really wish the horse mags/papers would make a bigger thing about saving our native breeds. The media has such power it could be used to such a good effect.

I was up at framlingham show last week end and they had a nice collection of Suffolks - was really nice to see so many on one show ground!

shocking to see that nearly all of our native heavy horses are on this watchlist, as are most of our oldest natives. what a saddening thing. when will people start to fight for our horses heritage if you will. to save the horses that have been here longer than we care to remember. very very sad

JM07-would they be slaughtered here, and sent back to France for 'processing' or are they for the table in this country?
-Not digging or sniping-just genuinely interested as to whether it has now become a delicacy in the UK?

Great pics!

You know, I am looking out for a filly at the moment, I may just look out for an endangered breed! Not Welsh section A feral though...just cant go there!!!! It isnt the Feral bit it is the Welsh Sec A! Monster ponies!

I would love a tiptop dressage horse but I think I would have more fun with something else!

Could this be the start of my stud?????

You only have to look at any 'how tall should he be' posts on this forum, and see that pony's (native or otherwise) are almost always dismissed as being too small for an adult to ride.

My 14.2hh NF was described as a 'childs pony', albeit by someone he had just dumped on the floor

I'm 50, so I'm not sure where that leaves me!

We have a local stables, where the owners are Exmoor enthusiasts who win a lot of showing classes, both ridden and in hand, but they are the exception.

We all know that tack follows fashion and so do horse breeds, it seems that right now, tall and flashy with competition background / potential sells, Native pony's are for kids. Very sad.

As for heavy horses, without the handful of enthusiasts that currently support the breeds, they would have long gone.

EDIT: I was going to make this comment on another thread, but it's got a bit messy. There was a class for ridden heavy horse at the Royal Show, Stoneleigh. It had a good number of entrants too. This has to be one way forward for our native heavy breeds.

You'd be suprised about the Eriskay-I'm 5'7" and (when I was a little lighter (up to 12 stone)) I'd hack, jump and hunt Mousey-was brilliant fun!

ponies/horses slaughtered here are sent abroad as carcass..

not everthing slaughtered here is sent abroad though...zoo's, safari parks, private collectors purchase horsemeat to feed their big cats, wovles etc..

My attention was drawn by Lesley Bayley's article in Countryside magazine Aug 2009 about the history of the breed and the setting up of The Suffolk Punch Trust
Apparently the colour can be any of 7 shades of CHESNUT without the T
Having grown up with Shire horses and now in Scotland see mainly Clydesdales I did not know much about the Suffolk Punch other than it having clean legs and was always chestnut in colour

Goodness me he could pass as a pure bred Punch TheresaW - your boy is absolutely gorgeous.

The Suffolk punch along with the dales & fell are amongst my favourite breeds out there, I would chose a native ANY day

Thankyou. He has an amazing character, and one day I would love to meet a purebred. He is apparently a bit on the small side at 16.1, but lots of people have said before that he looks almost full Suffolk.

If I was closer, I'd go to the open day. Is there another way to help?

In the article it says you can become a member of Suffolk Punch Trust--there is a contact form on the web site--perhaps ask about fund raising
Sounds like they have speakers who would come out to talk to say a RC for a fee to Trust etc
