Does anyone use sugar beet instead of chaff? Im trying to cut out Alfalfa and as finding an alfalfa free chaff is so hard (just grass is't going down very well) i was thinking will sugar beet sufice? Have heard of it before. If so what quantities, plus is it suiyable for all my nags? Along with adlib hay and suppliments.

I feed speedi beet as my mare is a good doer and its 95% sugar free. She only gets a small cup with blue chip and dengie good doer. I must admit at the moment she could do with loosing weight grrr - the vain of my life

not sure, i use SB and chaff. i just use the chaff to bulk it out really.
i tend to find SB keeps the weight on my boy, hence i feed it through the winter.
i make sure i feed a vitamin and mineral supplement too, to ensure he is getting everything he needs (currently on pink powder)

I use sugarbeet instead of chaff for my veteran. Only downside I can think of is if you had a horse that bolted its feed, then chaff might slow it down more than beet.

Standard molassed sugarbeet is about 20% sugar so not suitable for laminitics or for those that fizz up on sugar. Speedibeet is unmolassed and only 5% sugar so can be used for laminitics. Both unmolassed and molassed are quite high in calories at around 12.5 MJDE/kg which is similar to some conditioning cubes, so keep quantities to a minimum for good doers!

Yep - I do

Use unmolassed sugar beet and never use chaff

If you have a laminitic or sugar sensitive you can squeeze the water out and soak it twice. I do that even wiht the unmollassed stuff for the pony.
