My gelding has just been diagnosed with a sugar intolerance, lots of lumpy spots in his girth area. Hes incredibly hard to keep weight on at the best of times and has been on Baileys No 4 as that was about the only thing that was putting weight on. Vet tells me I should put him on a lower sugar diet, but I don't know if this means he loose weight again? Any ideas??

My horse wasn't allowed sugar so i put him on a high oil diet.

This actually made him gain weight as it is very high in fat so i had trouble keeping it off!!!

Alfa A oil has no mollasses so is a good subsitute for chaff. Allen and Page do a sugar and cereal intollerance mix which might suit. You can also add oil to feed as has already been said to add weight or even Black Oil Sunflower Seeds, just started giving my sugar intollerant mare some of these (she is also on Alfa A Oil) - no mix for her at the moment as she doesn't need it.
