Anybody got any experience using sugardine as a poultice to draw out an abscess? It would be on an open hoof wound on the sole but no sign of abscess yet.
I wouldn't, personally. Its great towards the end of an abscess to harden the hoof up again - but at this point in time, I'd want the hoof as soft as possible to allow an abscess to pop out easily - foot needs to be as warm and wet as possible
Ok, thanks. What can I use at home to draw infection out?
hot tubbing with the water as hot as you can stand it, then cover the sole with soggy cotton wool, tape the foot up, and let her move around on it to wiggle the abscess around til it bursts!
Have you got any drainage (farrier or trimmer?). I don't like leaving them to surface unaided, there have been instances of them tracking round the foot and doing damage. I always try and get drainage (gets rid of the acute pain often too) then animalintex for a couple of days. Sugardine if there is a hole on the ground surface which might get bacterial infection but TBH most don't need it
Ok, thankyou. And that will be ok on an open wound? Do I need anything in the water to disinfect it?
I'd just chuck a handful of salt in it for peace of mind! It's not really an open wound - it's more like sticking a pin under your nail
