Anybody got any experience using sugardine as a poultice to draw out an abscess? It would be on an open hoof wound on the sole but no sign of abscess yet.

I wouldn't, personally. Its great towards the end of an abscess to harden the hoof up again - but at this point in time, I'd want the hoof as soft as possible to allow an abscess to pop out easily - foot needs to be as warm and wet as possible

Ok, thanks. What can I use at home to draw infection out?

hot tubbing with the water as hot as you can stand it, then cover the sole with soggy cotton wool, tape the foot up, and let her move around on it to wiggle the abscess around til it bursts!

Soap is good and antiseptic but we usually use a damp nappy with epsom salts to draw out the infection. Hot tubbing twice a day - our farrier says have the water hotter than you think, the horse can stand it hotter than us.

Have you got any drainage (farrier or trimmer?). I don't like leaving them to surface unaided, there have been instances of them tracking round the foot and doing damage. I always try and get drainage (gets rid of the acute pain often too) then animalintex for a couple of days. Sugardine if there is a hole on the ground surface which might get bacterial infection but TBH most don't need it

Ok, thankyou. And that will be ok on an open wound? Do I need anything in the water to disinfect it?

I used to use a baby nappy(disposable) with a plastic bag and gaffer tape.. then I discovered animalintex hoof poltuce...but don't know if you have it there..

No, no drainage. They went in to try to find it. Then bandaged it up. But I need to change it cos I I manky. But wondered what I could apply to draw it.

I wish you lived near me as this saga of your awful vet visits must be driving you nuts

If someone came to my yard with a bit of a dilemma (Usually they have run out of hay on a Saturday evening) but if it was a suspected abscess I would automatically be able to help just by opening my first aid box, do you have any horse people around you that you can call on, its quite possible that in Spain they have a well tried, tested and easy to get hold of items or will drag it out for you and you can replace it

If you were near to me I would be around like a shot, my farrier also keeps all these products in his van just in case they are needed, have you tried that route. I have never heard of a poultice staying on for 4 days so your vet obviously doesn't use Animalitex or can't read, your vet may be using something else, a hot poultice would cool after a while so obviously needs changing every 12 hrs to begin with if it to be much help
