Suggest a 4x4 for 2k that will tow ifor510 and 2x 15.2's

I am now beyond confused with this !!

I have spent the last 2 days trawling the web looking for an alternative to a 2.5 Disco but it stands out at the moment as the only one every one says will be ok and I can get for under 2k !! I am just really worried about the horror stories for them breaking down


The thing I am most confused by is if I have to be able to tow the max wieght of the trailer or just the actual weight I am wanting to tow - why have they made this SO difficult. It should be illegal for this law to be so hard to understand everyone seems to have a conflicting opinion.

Can anyone suggest any other models that can tow the above combination

I have seen a 2.7 SWB nissan Terrano for super cheap and would like to be moblie by September 11th I could afford to just go and get this but would it be legal !! if not would it be legal for 1 15hh ?

My boyfriend will drive, he can drive everything- I have to take the test.

I have a suzuki grand vitara 2 litre petrol, my max is 1850kg, my trailer is 800kg I count my horse as 500kg even though I think he's less, I have towed him and my friends 14.2

510 is I think approx 1300 kg before you start so if you count each horse as 500 thats 2300kg before you add the tack etc

What about a Jeep cherokee can tow 3500 kg I think please check
 
argh, I would avoid jeeps like the plauge (sorry!), my recommendation would be an isuzu trooper (get the 3.1 engine) - I personally prefer the SWB as it is a pretty long set up with the trailer too. Great vehicle, can be got for your budget and have plenty of tow capacity (3.5t). Ok, so you aren't going to win any speed races, but it will pretty much pull your house, and when you are happily cruising past people in their oakleys waiting for the tow tractor trying to get off a rained in field, you will be chuffed with your choice! I would save a little from your budget to put good off road tyres on too.
 
You could get an old Isuzu trooper. we have one of these (K reg) - it has a towing capacity of well over 2 tonnes, and tows my 14.2 big fat cob and my friends 15.2 big fat cob in an IFOR 510 up steep hills in the Chilterns with no problems at all. I think she paid about £2k for it a couple of years ago.
 
The Jeep Grand Cherokee can tow 3.5 tons. Mine is great, so are two of my friends who tow with theirs. I have had 4 x Isuzu Troopers, they were all fabulous, they were all the 3.1 engines, but it is hard to find them now, as they are all pretty old. They could all tow 3.0 tons. I decided not to have another one, when my last girl was written off in an accident. The last of the Troopers, the Euro engine 3.0 suffered from oil starvation problems and I would not recommend them.

Nope only the post 2002 models which are 2800kg and 3000kgs for the 3 doors

This is pre 2002 would I be taking a risk think not much changed ??

Ok so I looked at the jeep ( nearly fell of my chair when I saw they are 4lt Whaaa) also ins group 16 which is high the disco's were 10 /12

they do look smart though - I found this that is LPG coverted - is this still ok to tow with ??

Just been through this myself after having the disco break down for the final time!!! Ended up getting a N reg pajero 2.8ltr 7 seats for £1300 , yea its heavy on juice (bout same as disco as that ran like crap!!) But it will tide us over till I win lottery :D
 
Just remember that if you have a car converted to lpg that you can't use it on lpg while you tow your horses.

And depending on how you feel about the price of tax if you go for below march 2001 you fall into the old tax bracket. If its over that then you can quite easily spend £400+ on car tax a year.

Were you ok getting the Pajero insured? I thought it might be funny with them being imports ?

Re Tax I'd worked that out lol (another falling off my chair experiance - god knows how I manage to stay on a horse)

You have also confirmed my thoughts re LPG

Friend had a couple of troopers - great workhorses. Then an older Cherokee petrol. Was ok, not as good at towing as the isuzu, although another friend had the diesel and that was great. I had a swb pajero and went all over the country with it.... Daihatsu would be brilliant but becoming as rare as hens teeth apparently!

Looks nice. They are work horses so a few knocks here and there are pretty likely! Fuel tank was one thing I was going to mention as they do get rusty and we have recently replaced ours, but it says it has been tidyied which is nice but would want more info on that really, generally you just want to have an eye on the rust. Good mileage too. We also had to replace our alternator, and that is another job this has had done which is handy. Ours is N reg and we have just had the rear break pipes done as they were getting too rusty. We have also had the base steam cleaned and waxoiled so should hopefully keep a lid on new rust. (the break pipes, waxoyl and cleaning cost us £200 to give you an idea of bills)
Our insurance (fully comp) is about £260 each year (with 11 years no claims, but extra as it isn't kept at home).
Tbh for the price, assuming all is well (and you have a full MOT which is ace) then it is a good buy. If we were looking for the same again then we would be very interested!
I would expect to throw a few hundred at it for safety/peace of mind and get your local garage to go over the brakes and tyres with a fine tooth comb. Given it's age (and depending how much towing it has done in the past) then in the next few years you might need to look at a new clutch, but if it is what it says, then it does look good.
 
Can't quote on phone! A few companies wouldn't insure the Pajero (& the one I was already with) but after a look online I found it pretty easy to sort. Quotes were bizarre though ranging from £700 (me & OH both have naughty points!) upto £1800!!! Needless to say I went with the £700 quote :)!!

I am very very lucky to have an ex HGV driving OH who has rebuilt a 1978 Ford escort from pretty much a shell and his father who is a welding and fabrication engineer - The circles we move in we should be able to fix most things but so little folk had faith in the disco it put me off ! I've sent this on Email to the powers that be - to pick something up at this price would mean I can keep my run around car too :-)

I tow an Ifor 510 with my Isuzu Trooper 3.1 turbo diesel. Its a 1995 N reg. Ive owned it now for coming up 8 yrs and wouldnt swap it. Tows beautifully, last weekend I took my 16hh and a friends 16.2 plus 2 in the car and all tack etc and she towed like a dream. Struggled a little with steep hills but thats 2 fairly heavy horses in there, when i say struggled, had to drop down a gear. On the motorway, hardly knew they were there though it was quite obvious when I dropped her off. Not had many problems with the car over the years, just put a new exhaust on for £130. Does help that hubbie is a RAC man and looks after her anyway. Got the RAC Trailer Assist for £45 per year which is always reassuring to have. Diesel consumption is very good and I use daily for work. I highly recommend this car. Proper workhorse and fab in the snow!
 
Daihatsu Fourtrak fan here too! My only gripe with it is that there isn't a huge amount of space in the back, but it's tough as old boots. It will also soon be for sale, with only 67k on the clock (R reg) but still checking how much I can ask for it.
