Having looked at so many wrecks of wagons, I've decided I am going to buy a 4x4 and trailer. Trouble is, my budget is limited (up to £4k). I have had a Range Rover (P38) but it wasnt the most reliable vehicle I've ever had (altho towing with it was fantastic). Anyone suggest other good towing vehicles?

Many thanks.

Hi i stayed away from the range rover as had heard they could be unreliable and got an old turbo diesel discovery instead pulls like a dream even with two big horses all tack and full car was no problem what so ever... if you look at the older models can pick some fairly cheap ones up most do have high mileage but for diesels are just run in. and if you get the older models tax is much cheaper at just £260 for the year.

I rate these massively for towing as you feel so safe and can tow the maximum of 3500 so your ifor 510 which are sllightly heavier trailers would still be no problem...

good look in your search..

I quite like my Vauxhall Frontera (very underrated as towing vehicles). They're an old model now & I don't know what the replacement (Antera) is like, but you can pick them up second hand with a low mileage sometimes for within your budget. I've had two now and they're reasonably reliable and pull very well. I'm also in love with my friend's Mitsubishi Pajero. Tows so well you don't know the box is behind you. Can't remember the capacities off-hand, though, I'm afraid.

I've just recently purchased a range rover and it is fantastic. It has a max tow capacity of 3500 and kerb weight is 2150 I think. I spent ages looking for a tow car and both myself and OH are good with cars so the issues you can get with landrovers doesnt bother us as we can fix them if they go wrong. There are models your best to make sure have to know landy issues fixed in before you buy.
I looked at the disco aswell but prefered the shape of the range rover and that why I bought mine.
The shogun is also a good towcar with a good tow weight on it.
I had a shot of a Kia sorento before I bought my range rover and it was a good tow car but for my liking I didnt like the styling inside or out. But that just my opinion.

If you buy a 4x4 if you go for a year before march 2001 its under the old tax bracket.

Hi. Another vote for the Discovery. Ours tows two big irish sports like its empty! They are fairly cheap to buy second hand, and easy to get parts for, so not bad to maintain. The older ones do rust - but I'm talking R-W kind of years.

I second the shogun after the disco!

If you're brave and know someone mechanical who could go with you for a look, we saw no end of cheap discoveries going through the auctions last month - and all in pretty good shape. A 2003-5 type was going through for about £3k. Even a 2008 new type went through for £11k!

They do drink fuel though - so fine for occasional towing and local useage. I have taken ours from up North to London on a couple of occasions, and its cost nearly double what my focus costs - and was much slower!

I'm looking similar to you but a slightly smaller budget. My experiences so far are:-

Daihatsu 4track - very bumpy, tows well but agricultural - I have an ancient one at the moment, but I don't like it.

Discovery (which I tried last night) - very heavy cumbersome car and needed constant correction to drive in a straight line. Can tow up to 4000kg according to Autotrader & pretty good on the fuel consumption.

Shogun - not driven one, but tiny boot space

Terranos - I've had 3 of these to date - excellent towing car and easy to drive around. Seems to tow better than the stats suggest.

Kia Sorento - again not driven one, but the stats look good and have heard some good reviews on here.

Jeep Grand Cherokee - Again not driven one but can tow up to 3500kg, goodish fuel consumption if you get a diesel.

As the Kia's are a bit out of my budget I'm looking to get either a Jeep or a Terrano.

Autotrader is a quite a good website as you can click on the stats to see the fuel consumption, insurance group and towing capabilities.
