Hi im new to this forum so please be nice :p

Im looking to put my mare in foal next year, and am currently looking at potential stallions. I want something with very good showjump blood lines, my mare is AES registered and out of Randi - she herself began her showjump career well but was then sold on as a 5 year old and disappeared off the radar. She is a sweet, kind mare - chestnut, so can be a little fizzy and is only 15.3 so i need a big strapping lad with the hope of breeding a foal 16hh+

Any ideas....

Don VHP Z at Brendons would be my choice - stands 17.2 so would add the height and is bred in the blue as they say for jumping. He has just won and won this year and just finished his year by winning the Grade C champs at HOYS last week.

He does look lovely! Slightly worry about their description of 'big framed horse with big sense of humour' though....

I do like the look of Unbelievable Darco - and it says he has a lovely temperament too :)

don't be put off by that, he is a lovely boy and I am definitely using him next year. I have a mare in foal to Unbelievable Darco and can't wait to meet him or her. All the Brendon stallions have wonderful temperaments, if they don't Shirley whips off their bits! Paris (Don VHP Z) is stunning and for a young horse he has achieved an enormous amount this year.

You could also look at Quainton Stud's Chateau de Brion. His youngsters are becoming more in demand and lovely looking types. I have a colt by him and couldn't have asked for more.

How about Billy Congo or Billy Mexico? I wasn't impressed with Don VHP Z, just a bit ponderous when it jumped not quick enough through the air. Another couple were Renkum Off Centre and Romanov. The pick of the bunch would be Big Star but don't know if there are any plans to stand him at stud.

I disagree re his being slow, sorry. He has won classes this year against the clock and won in Lanaken, you don't do that by being slow and ponderous. He also regularly jumps double clears, which are as important as fast moving speed horses. He also won the 7 year old Championships in Portugal with Shane Breen this year. Here is a video - there are more on you tube

I do agree re Billy Congo and Billy Mexico though - as well Cevin Z who produces some lovely youngstock for the Billy Stud.

I LOVE Billy Mexico and his temperament at SSGB really impressed me as he came in and jumped massively in the demo and then an hour or so later was back in to give display of just polework, etc with Pippa on another horse alongside.

I know Don VHP pretty well and he is a lovely horse.....by sense of humour I think they probably mean that he is a lovable cheeky chap that is a yard favourite.....is absolutely doted on by all! To handle he is like a lovable clown but becomes a rolls royce under saddle as everyone I know that has ridden him has loathed having to get off! You couldn't also look for better bloodlines and his foals are very much like dad - I don't think I know of one yet on the ground that is for sale as none of the breeders will sell them! Unbelievable Darco is also fabulous....a huge teddy bear and is definitely the pet of the yard being the longest standing stallion and general baby....he is handled by any and everyone and is a complete gentleman.

He just didn't seem to be as forward and quick through the air compared with the others. Maybe I saw him on an off day. However he's 17.2 and if you are breeding a horse for an amateur he may breed too big especially if it's for a girl to ride.

When i look for a stallion i first give the mare a good look over to see what things i would like to improve about her and that whittles the "potential" list down to about 400!! After that i would always want to meet the stallion (especially if it is young). I think it is always a good idea for a "home breeder" to speak to a few studs and get their opinions on the mare and the potential hubby and also the best way to go about actually getting her pregnant!!

Also would the foal be for yourself? This would make a difference to choice as some stallions can give quirky offspring while others will give something with a more laid back attitude.

Best of luck :)

definitely see if you can make it to SSGB at Addington Manor in February. there will be plenty of stallions there, including those mentioned here from the Brendon and Billy Studs, plus many more. you get the chance to meet them in their stables as well as see them perform, so ideal really. Hartpury Stallion parade is (I think), the last week in January.

Thanks, i will deffo do some further research on the stallions suggested and will definately be trying to get to SSGB or the stallion parade.

I want to pass on a positive and trainable attitude to my mare's foal. Whether for me or for sale, either way suitable for a lady so perhaps i need to avoid the stallions renowned for 'quirky' offspring. I do not however want to compromise on athletic ability and competitive spark. :):)

Definitely agree that if you are breeding a foal for yourself that you MUST meet the stallion in person so that you can assess their temperament. You need to make sure that you end of up with something that is sane and that you can handle (especially if you ever find yourself having to sell)

I chose a fab looking daddy for my colt. Whilst conformation and looks were important, what swung it for me was hearing that a 2 year old child visiting his yard once ran into his stable, under his belly and stood there just hugging one of his legs. The stallion just stood there and never moved a muscle!

Seeing other offspring where possible is also a good thing IMO

keofee on here has a nice stallion loulou de villiers..met him in the flesh very nice and impressive and had a good temprement..may be worth a look...

We have a mare in foal to Congo for next year, we also have had a colt by Give me Remus who is rather special.
