Suggest dog breeds, please! (15-25# range)

Corgi’s would fit your wants. Like with any breed you just have to find a breeder breeding a type that’s for you. Some can be very long and very low. Mine are less so, although my bitch is quite low at the front, and they both cope fine. There are some super breeders in the states with dream confirmation and shape. I’d also suggest a Shetland sheepdog ad you’ve suggested - I think one might find it’s way here when I have no more rough collies left

Or what about a mini Aussie? I met two the other week and were smitten. They’re both from the same breeder who’s imported dogs from over the pond, so I would think you wouldn’t be short of a good breeder or two. These were about sheltie sized, and marvellous!

Mini Aussies are adorable and if breeders would just leave their tails alone we would probably consider one. Poor Clover had a horrific scar from having her tail docked and it bothered her her entire life, our Miniature Schnauzer Shadow had a botched dew claw removal that caused him so much trouble we ended up having it surgically corrected a few years ago; my mom and I are determined from now on to only have dogs that haven't been hacked at but it's proving difficult to find American breeders of smaller breeds who leave their puppies natural! It looks like there is starting to be a bit of a trend here to leave Corgis' tails alone though so that might be the way we go! Do you know of any breeders stateside that you would recommend?

Finnish lapphund if you like the floofy dogs. Girls tend to be much smaller the the males and generally a very healthy breed with breeders who health test/screen as standard. My girls are 12 and 14kg.Friendly, happy human social dog, friendly with dogs. Small amount of prey drive thats managable-mine are fine with cats rabbits etc I don't trust them with chooks. I'm bias and think they are absolutely stunning to, my two pictured below. Black and tan are the most common colour wise but they come in a spectrum of colours. They get prettier as they age as the colours and marking develop from puppy to adulthood.

Regarding the winter walking with the de-icing chemicals, I see dogs in the UK walked in boots these days, could you do the same?
.
I don't know how much protection boots would be since they burned right through the sole of my sister's boots. I used to see quite a few people walking their dogs year-round but it's severely tapered off since the chemicals started being used. My family jokes that responsible dog owners all start walking their dogs on the same day in spring.

15-25lbs rules out most spaniels, but the American or English cocker is only slightly heavier than that range.

I was otherwise going to suggest a clumber spaniel because they are gentle and not too hyper but will still enjoy a walk, play with kids etc.

My current dog is a GBGV and I would have recommended that breed but they average at about 25kgs and they aren't very easily manhandled because of the length to height ratio ?

A well raised lakie or Welshie can be family friendly.

I have a real soft spot for wippets. Lovely dogs.

Just seen where you live. I lived in Edina for a few years as a kid and Minnesota winters are vicious! I also thought you meant 15-25kgs rather than lbs so for a small dog defo a Bichon or bichon cross - they are so cute. Or a Clumber Spaniel which is what I would love - my current Springer is nuts (in a good way)

With your steps a rescue would be better as wouldn't want a puppy going up and down those steps unless your mum can carry it until it's close to a year old.

I don't believe the streets were deiced with chemicals when I lived there - just snowploughs. That sounds a really environmentally unfriendly way of clearing snow and ice.

I think they only started using the deicing chemicals about 8-9 years ago, it was definitely less than 10 years ago, a lot of people are very frustrated because it is wreaking havoc on vehicles and pavements as well as causing concern about what damage it is doing environmentally, especially to all of the lakes and rivers.

Thanks to everyone who suggested a breed or breeds! You've given us a lot of ideas and my mom is very pleased that I am more open to possibly getting a corgi.
