My 7 yr old mare is in medium/ hard work 5-6 days a week, is fed what i consider a large amount of feed (dengie alfalfa, cheap nuts and dobsen and horell build up conditioning mix) and has large amount of hay as grazing is a bit sparse at the mo. In the last month i have noticed her looking a bit on the thin side and it looks as though she has lost muscle and looks a bit airy fairy. She is very exciteable when jumping so dont want anything that will make her go cranky but something to give her her sparkle back, add condition, topline, and weight. (And not be too expensive!!)

I always use Baileys outshine. It is expensive but you don't need to feed much

It has worked for both my WB who lost condition after weaning, but also on a number of TB's in full time work. They fill out, but don't fizz up, and it also gives them a lovely coat.

I team this with baileys no.4 topline cubes, always seems to do the trick.

we just feed build up mix and alfa-A.

up the full ration of it, cut out the cheap nuts, add oil (linseed oil if you can get it) and that should do the trick.

I've always found National Horse Feeds Speedi-beat mixed with a bit of the Dengie Hi Fi Lite and half measure of Dengie Alfa A works well with a scoop of Baileys No.6 Endurance mix.

Te sugar beat is 95% sugar free, so you're getting a good dose of fibre there along with the hi-fi lite yet gaining slow release energy and conditon from both the alfa a and the mix, this mix has more oil in than most typical competiton mixes but with the bonus of having less starch.

So for a horse than needs condition, a bit more energy without the fizz it's a good combo, also you could add some Naff Pink Powder which will also help your horse to get the most out of her diet so in time you may find that you don't actually have to feed as much, I'd probably introduce it this by feeding two small feeds a day.

i second the top spec conditioning flakes. have also had good results with equivite body builder. noticed a diff in about 2 weeks with theese two.

Equivite body builder is V expensive though!
I feed readymash to my skinny TB, she has put on loads of weight in the last few weeks.

Another vote for Baileys Outshine here, has worked a treat on my skinny TB without sending him loopy (like the D&H build up did)

Alfalfa A OIL
Baileys Top Line conditioning cubes
ad lib haylage

and if really needs it the outshine, but it is pricey and if fussy she might not eat it. But it does work quickly.

I would scrap the nuts, remember not to feed in a quantity larger than a rugby ball otherwise most of the nutrients are pooed straight out, alot of people think they can just increase their one feed a day, when they should split it into 2 or 3!

Ring Baileys the advice from them is priceless x

I use Allen & Page Weight Gain.

Was keeping my lad ticking along on their Old Faithful but he lost condition over the tail end of winter to the point of looking poor and found that the Weight Gain has made a huge difference.

Recommended to my friend to use with her TB and she noticed good improvements too (she couldn't find Baileys No1 for love nor money which was what she had beed feeding him). However, she did notice that he was somewhat lively after being fed Weight Gain  My boy is fine on it though so could be that what works for one won't work for another.

You will get loads of advise here but you need to find something that works for you / your horse and know that you can readily get hold of a constant supply.

Baileys Outshine
Coostance copra meal, both should not cause problems with starch over load and Coolstance is mainly fibre so a very natural feed. Just look for the digestable energy per kilogram, DE and then see what suits you for the price.
I also have a cheap set of old fashioned scales and weigh all new feeds so I know how much I am giving

Build and Glow (think its by D&H) highly recommend this, its fed in small quantities almost like adding a supplement, worked wonders and all mine and my friends show horse, gave me mare a bit of spark that she's never had before either.

Top Spec Conditioning Flakes (yellow bag).

Worked wonders for my mini tb

Defo this! I've tried loads on my TB.. Dodsen&Horrel, Baileys, Allen&Page, and a few more, but TopSpec is the only one that has worked on him!

Hes on Alfa A Oil, TopSpec Cool Condition Cubes and some of the Super Condition Flakes, and starting on some sugarbeet for winter :) he gets it split into 2 feeds a day so he's not getting a huge feed in 1 go.

Coolstance copra meal. My dear little Arab was a nightmare for keeping weight on, and the copra worked a treat. I used it like a supplement, so he was fed it along with alfa oil and hf cubes. A bag costs around £17, but that should last you 5/6 months easy

Baileys number 6 (conditioning cubes) work wonders on my 26 year old TB. They're not as heating as a mix but do the job of building up topline and condition brilliantly :) Also recommended them to a friend who is a professional show jumper and they are really pleased with the results.
