Suggest me a medium sized dog breed

I like the Tollers, very sweet faces. It would depend on their levels of activity though.

I went to meet some Australian Shephers today but they were too reminiscent of the Border Collie in terms of energy, so that breed is out.

lol my friend gets fed up of people thinking hers is a BC!!!! tbh I don't have any friends with BC so can't compare. The Tollers I know have what I would call a normal amount of exercise! lol!
 
Who was it who had the IWS at the meet last year? He wasn't a nutty spaniel at all, he was like a clownish poodly type thing and very lovable. :)

Belgian sheps are a bit lighter of bone and therefore will fit into smaller spaces than GSDs. :p

I find labs and goldies dull but the curlies and flats I have known have been more challenging. :)

LOVE the petit basset but they sound very hound-y. :p

Shibas prone to disappearing I would have thought.
 
Yeah, spangles are mental!! Mine have limited walks due to arthritis and hip dysplasia. They are very relaxed!

They had 20 minutes each today and have been asleep most of the afternoon and all evening.
 
What about a Tibetan Terrier?

They do not moult apart from the odd fur ball, they are very trainable, good in the car, love walks, full of character and very loyal to their owners

We have had ours 13 years and wouldn't be without him, this is him about 6 months ago (excuse the carpet, parents are doing the house up)

I'd second Tibetan & wheaten terriers. Or a bearded collie? All the ones I've known are energetic but not anywhere near the requirements of a border collie. The few briards I've met would seem to match what you want but I don't know enough about the breed to know if they were the rule or the exception.

I love bearded collies! That's another possible!
 
Cockerpoo and Spaniels: All the spaniels I know tend to be on the loopy side of high energy



I have a spriner/border collie and a springer and yes the springer would be loopy if it didn't have as much excercise as she does but the cross is amazing. Very easy to train, so intelligent and doesn't moult at all but has to be clipped twice a year but a really lovey cross if you can get one. Excellent with children and will play all day and sleep all night. :)
 
What about a Lurcher? I know I'm a bit biased, but a good lurcher would meet all of your requirements!! mine will walk for house (well hoon rather than walk a lot of the time) will curl up into a bed made for the JRT, and sleeps pretty much the whole rest of the time!
 
Ditto lurcher, and a rescue. If you pick a young adult dog you can see how big it'll get, and whether it has the brain and temperament you want.

Shame you aren't in UK, my current foster is a collie whippet bitch, 1 year old, only 20 inches TTS and very bright. Already has sit, recall, down, retrieve etc and only been here a week!

Many thanks everyone for all the suggestions! Loads of gorgeous breeds to pick from!

I'll look into the Tibetan Terrier a bit more, maybe go to meet a few and see if it's for us. We wouldn't be getting a puppy until the spring ideally (Dizzy is just about to go in for his second hernia operation and will then need 6 weeks controlled exercise which brings us right into the autumn so best wait out the bad weather).

We got ours from a breeder in Esher, Surrey but cannot remember the name of them as it was quite a while ago :D they are fab dogs and they age well, you wouldn't know mine was 13 as he is still a puppy in some ways, the vet always comments on his teeth and how good they are, my parents feed him quite a bit of veg
 
Can't believe no-one has mentioned the best dog of all :p not that i'm biased at all :D

What about a Hungarian Puli? My friends have just brought home a 10 week one after lots of research (their girls are 9 and four) and seem to be very happy so far. It also gives me the excuse to say that 'it's a long way to Tipperary' because that is where they had to go for it :p

What about a dalmatian, they cast all year, are sometimes nutty, but are very beautiful, loyal, love horses, and make excellent lap dogs, wether you want that or not, you dont have much choice!!:D

Dalmatians are gorgeous looking, probably too nutty overall.

I'm just about to call a TT breeder I found near us, maybe we can go visit, meet the dogs, see what we think about the breed. Check out the other photo for Halfy:

With regard to shelties I wouldn't have one. MY SIL breeds them and they are all very yappy and snappy (this might be something to do with her of course LOL). Not my cup of tea at all and they moult for Europe!!!

I dont know why you lot think Springer Spaniels are loopy! In fact if properly trained from puppy stage they are awfully relaxed and it helps to have another dog as it will keep them grounded. I am biased :p

But if your sure, how about a sheepdog. Very intelligent and active, easy to train too.
Cocker spaniels too, or how about a Golden Retriever?
 
POODLE!!! We have a standard poodle and he is just the best!! No moulting, fantastic with other dogs, even when he has met not very nice ones, he just doesn't realise bless him. He is great with the horses and comes out riding with me, he tries to play with the chickens but when the chase him he gets scared bless him, we also have a 4 month old baby and he is so so gentle with him. We don't meet many of them but the ones that we have met have all been lovely. He doesn't have a funky haircut just all off to keep him cool. Great guard dog but will lick anyone who comes to the door! My very non doggy parents love him and look after him easily if we go away. He will go on as long or short a walk as you want and is just a very loving fun and friendly dog. I wish there were more of them around, they are perfect as they are without needing to be crossed with anything else. Aww want to go and wake our boy up for a cuddle now.
