My gorgeous friesian has a lovely long mane down to the top of her leg, I would like to keep this as thick and as long as possible. Does anyone know any good supplements that will help this and keep her coat in general good health too?

Supreme Showing Products make something called Moisturise and Condition - I use this on my chestnut warmblood, who has the most delicate mane/skin you can imagine (just have to breath on his coat and it falls out!). Anyway, since using this, he has had no more rug rub on his shoulder, and his mane is growing back lovely. I know it's slightly different than applying to a long-maned Fresian, but I am sure it would work too. I think that, combined with a general mane conditioner should work - the moisturise and conditioner does what it says on the tin (or bottle) and strengthens the hairs, whilst a seperate mane detangler/conditioner makes it silky smooth so that it doesn't snag on rugs etc and get pulled out.

Edited to say just re-read OP and see you meant supplement to add to feed - I would second Linseed meal, that is a great coat conditioner. Also Equijewel - brilliant IMO.

I'd agree use something now externally then also get a something that will make the hair & skin healthy & shiny, I use Xlint it has flax oil and omega 3 and loads of things in it, my horses shine all year round on this it's about £30 for a huge bucket but it keeps really well as long as it's not too warm (forever the optimist) I'm just coming to the end of my bucket and it's done me from October for 3 horses they only need a little of it. As a bonus you have a great size durable bucket for the yard!!

I'd also say Linseed and Brewers yeast. Since my fella started having Simple Sutems Total Eclipse (Linseed, Brewer's Yeast and Seaweed) his coat is very shiny :)

Full fat linseed meal! 200g per day. I buy a 25Kg sack which lasts me ages and only costs £21.00. Brewers Yeast is full of vit B, so is good for skin and coat condition - plus is reputed to help with itchiness. So is good if you have an itchy horse. I feed a heaped desert spoonful per day. My horses coats positively gleam without heavy grooming, and I am frequently complimented on my horses fine silky coats.

For external application to keep a long mane and tail hair in gleaming, tangle-free, and tip top condition, I recommend CowBoy Magic Detangler and Shine. In the winter I drench the lower section of my horses tails in Pig Oil, once a week. This keeps the mud from sticking and keeps the hair supple and conditioned. I'm not adverse to lighly applying it to a long mane, either. Once the spring arrives I give the mane and tail a thorough washing in a mild shampoo to remove any over-winter residue, and then start using the Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine once every two weeks or so. I tend not to comb through the long mane and tail more than I have to. I prefer to run my fingers through it, in between applications of conditioner.

Good luck. Hope you find something that works for you too :)

Spyda I was interested to read your post - lots of people recommended Linseed oil to me for a healthy looking coat on my ponies, but one of my boys hates it and after a few days has totally refused to eat his feed, so maybe I should try and get hold of it in meal form instead ... I didnt realise you could get it like that ... thanks. :)

Westgate (Gold Label) to a dried linseed or you could try either Barley Rings which include it or linseed lozenges which you can get from your feed merchant.
There are also black sunflower seeds which some people swear by.

Try Gravenhorse.co.uk (at http://www.gravenhorse.co.uk/Products.htm) as they are happy to send out a free sample. That way you can taste-test it on your horse. My WB isn't particularly found of it. When she's hungry in winter she'll eat it up mixed into the rest of her ration. But in Autumn when reintroduce it after the Summer, when she's still on 24/7 grass - I have to reduce the amount I feed her considerably and 'hide' it in copious amounts of Happy Hoof chaff! It is worth trying though. Works wonderfully if you can persuade them to eat it. :)

I'd read somewhere that black sunflower seeds are very good for the coat and apparently for deepending the colour of it. People in USA seem to feed a lot of them, you can buy big bags for birds.
