Can anyone help? A friend and I would like to go pony trekking in the spring. What we would both really like is to go somewhere that will take us on a nice scenic ride, mainly walking, with some trotting, mainly so we can just enjoy the hack, and take in some nice scenery. We are both reasonably experienced riders, but having looked through a few websites, I can only really find longer treks that involve loads of cantering, which I dont want!

Depending on what area of the UK you are looking at, I know of a place in Wales that you may like...

I have been there twice, once for a day and again 4 months later for three days.

Slower placed treks through stunning landscapes, mainly walk and trot - possibly 10% canter...

Not sure I am am allowed to post names/links on here - so PM me if you want to know more!

If you are anywhere near the Midlands, I can thoroughly recommend Cannock Chase Trekking Centre, where I go at least once a month (don't have my own horse). They do a 2 hour 'mixed ability' trek that is mainly walk/trot, but experienced riders get to split off for a canter too if they like (maybe 3 or 4 canters in total). There is a little more cantering on their experienced ride (and more trotting), but even that has plenty of time at walk to enjoy the scenery. Said scenery is lovely, and you may even get to see the deer out on the chase if you're lucky. The horses are fab too, and not your standard trekking horses - they have a good range from calm and novice friendly to more forward going but still safe. I love it!

Edited for typos.

Anywhere from Scarborough down to Cambridge, across the country, and just over the border into Wales would about do the trick!

I have not been myself, but I have heard good reports of a Western riding Place in the Pennines. Maybe someone else would have more info?

Edited to say....... Ooops cross posted, but the above poster has the contact details.

Nice to know 2 people have heard good things.

Caeiago Riding Centre in Wales - can't recommend them highly enough! Lovely scenery, friendly set-up, delicious food and well-behaved horses without being plods.

Couldn't have put it better myself - went for a day in Feb this year, then went back for three days end of June - time, money and weather permitting maybe next year too....

Went there a few years ago and would love to go back! Here's a (faded, as it's on the sideboard) photo of a typical lunchtime picnic by a lake: to those who know Caeiago, that's the legendary Charlie on the left ...
