Baby is off to Futurity, but doesn't like being groomed, let alone washed! Any suggestions that allows me to keep all my limbs in one piece?
Last attempt resulted in massive brusing and an elbow that didnt want to work for a week or so!

Are you taking about a foal or an older baby!!

If its a foal, what we do is basically give it a wash/groom while being pinned between its mum and a handler, they seem to panic less!!

An older baby, should allow its self to be washed/groomed. Have a holder and a washer, use a wall on one side and the washer, buckets, water etc. on the other. A corner is a great asset as then youngster can only go up or forward, hopefully the holder is experienced enough to deal with it.. Go gently, but do not stop just because baby has a tantrum, they soon calm down once they realise you mean business.

If you are tackling this on your own, good luck!!!!!!!! It really does pay to have extra hands around, and also makes it a lot safer for both you and your baby.

Warm water, most definatly. My foal dunks her head in warm water up to her eyes....very funny to watch, but she self washes her head!!

She did get sponged with cold water once on a very hot day and took offence and put herself on the floor.

Naughty indeed! Worse is that mum stands like a dream, rolling her eyes at him not in the least bothered by his tantrum. Thank goodness he's not coloured!

We'll have to do our best cos he's a bit greasy, but this time it will be a solo effort. Last time me and hepler were much wetter than him. May try small amount each night til the 'day'.

Thanks all

I would second the warm water suggestion! My 4yo stallion is a big wimpy drama-queen about baths, so the lovely people at his stud always use warm water. With warm water he is fine - even seems to enjoy it.
