Having read a recent post about sufficient excercise for small dogs, and not having had a long dog or either of her parent breeds (greyhound x whippet) before, only Gsds and collie x ? I wondered what advice would be available from this forum. Scenario: Gsd pts this March, aged 13, old age related illnesses, no longer manageable by vet support, medication careful management. Long happy life, easeful death. That's it. No more dogs. Heartbroken etc. Fast forward: had 9 yr old female long dog since May. History of abuse, neglect and ignorance plus a large dollop of bad luck.was going to be pts cos apparently didn't fit any rescue criteria. " I'll just bring her over to show you". She never went back! Weasel friends!
Very quiet, flat and gloomy in mood. Poorish condition, lack of muscle, no training, no vaccs. Ghastly pink plastic collar!
Now, has 2 off lead 45 mins walks up n down hilly country we live in, another 30 min walk on lead round village, and sometimes all day outings to horse/dog/country events, but she gets a bit tired towards the end of these, so will shorten such outings to a couple of hours out.
She adores flat out running, playing with other dogs, coming out round our fields with the horse, they seem very fond and careful of each other, and she has a 95% recall, will obey come, wait, sit, down, excuse me (!) and off ( ie leave that dead whatever etc alone NOW).
She is very well muscled up, has vaccs, microchip, insurance and has JWB twice a day, plus 2 Yumega tabs for any stiffness of joints. She and the cat seem to spend most of their days and nights snoozing and snoring when not tearing around, sitting being admired, swaggering about the place, or eating and drinking! Long dog also has an extensive wardrobe of elegant coats for cold and wet weather, and a very lovely tapestry collar from Ki...h collars!
So, more or less excercise or anything else? Vet is happy (he is a whippet n greyhound enthusiast n v knowledgeable) and she gets lots of compliments. She is a lovely shiny silver beige, with some narrow grey stripes round her eyes.
