hi just wondering if anybody could advise me on a suitable bit for my 16.2 welsh section D x TB gelding, I hack out every week and regularly have canters/gallops, ive currently got him in full cheek french link and although this is fine at walking and trotting when im doing any more he starts to lean on the bit and can become quite an handful. he is rather mischievious & will occasionally try to take off. I was thinking perhaps waterford ???. I ride with relaxed hands but dont want anything too strong as he doesnt seem to enjoy the bit putting in his mouth full stop when tacking him up. tried an happy mouth but it didnt take long for him to chew through it. any ideas ? he is 11 yrs old

if he leans, then (easier said than done I know!) don't let him. My mare can become heavy in canter, and then is v hard to pull up. If I keep v elastic moving elbows then she can't lean as there is nothing to lean on - hey presto she pulls up! It is amazing the difference on brakes a little lean can make!
Before considering what bit to use take a look at his mouth - does he have a large tongue or a low palate? Often a french link lozenge, but shaped like a neue schule, can be comfortable for most horses. Perhaps a wilkie or hanging cheek with a french link mouthpiece will add just that bit more breaks?
