Suitable second dog with Malamute

I know the sensible answer is "another Malamute" but, our 2 year old Malamute Korban has had surgery for a luxating patella and is not going to be able to match his previous walking time of 2.5 hours a day. We were building his walking up, vet said to listen to him, he would let us know when he had enough - anything more than around an hour and hes visibly stiff later in the evening so we are sticking at one hour a day and a play in the garden in the morning - he seems fine with this and hasnt eaten my house :D

So, we had been planning on taking a rescue Mal and had filled out the paperwork but shelved our plans due to Korben needing surgery - I dont feel it would be fair on Korben to bring a fully able bouncing Malamute into our home that he cant keep up with, so I'm looking elsewhere for another suitable breed that will be able to match him in size (hes very playful and flattens the little Staffie next door he usually plays with cause he forgets his size) but will be happy with an hours walk a day - can be left alone for 4/5 hours a day, with free run of the house and will be a suitable playmate for him.

So any suggestions? :)
 
I have contacted malamute rescue and they dont have any suitable dogs in at the moment but agree that an older bitch would be idea company for him - are there any other rescues for this breed other than AMCUK Rescue.

And can you link me any rescues for Labs and Pointers other than Caithness and Scotland for labs? Or any other rescues in general - would like to have a chat with them just to make an informed decision.
 
Has the 6 year old bitches gone out now from the AMCUK rescue? She was very chilled and quiet. I went to see hee but she was too laid back for my nanook.

Do you mean Lina and Storm? Bit far away really as was hoping to make several visits to the dog before deciding and taking Korben with us - we are in Scotland

He is fine with all other dogs but we are looking for a bitch incase that changes - hes only 2 at the moment and still has some maturing to do and I wouldnt want to risk it

What kind of walking would a sibey need at that age? My main concern is ensuring that I can walk them both together for the same amount of time and that Korben wont have the either get left at home while I extra walk another dog or end up doing too much.

LOL - we had a friend bring round her small dog to see how they got on as it was my first thought, however Korben thought it was a small moving soft toy and kept trying to pick him up in his mouth - then he paw swiped the poor guy half way across the living room, so we ruled that out pretty quickly
 
Yes Lina was the one we went to see. She was soo chilled out almost another breed in mally clothing! We are also looking for another so shall follow with interest!

An older sibe would be happy with an hour's walk a day and free roam of a secure garden (in fact Ricoh would be more than happy with that arrangement and he's only three :p).

Have a look at the SHWA Facebook page and speak to Karen Johnson, it was her who put up the pic of the ten year old the other day, he's waiting to be fully assessed but for the moment is described as woolly and very laid back. :)
 
My Dad has a JR with his malamute. They are both males. His malamute also gets on great with all my male dogs. He is so chilled and has such good body
Language to tell a dog to go away! He loved meeting our new puppy even thou she was smaller than his head. He was very gentle with her.
