Hi,

I'm just wondering what everyone's experience is.

My tobiano Gelderlander starts moulting literally the day after the longest day, and now he has quite a substantial coat(in his terms anyway) and has been quite hot during the hot weather, even when stood in the field which has plenty of natural shade. He's soaked when working and I'm considering clipping him. I normally clip in Sept but I'm concerned regarding the sunburn risk. I don't like to leave his fly rug on a lot as it rubs his mane out. The stables are wooden and hot during the day so leaving him in isn't really an option either i'm afraid.

Any hints, tips or opinions welcome

Thanks

Not much help but im going through the same situation with my mare. she has such a coat on her so is very hot all the time but i dont want her in because it wont help yet shes getting sunburnt even without a clip - cant win!

I've clipped and always do but then I keep her in during the day and she goes out in a fly rug to avoid the evening sun.

I clip one of ours all year round, however they are in during the day.

I wouldn't have a horse out with no rug on that is clipped, would feel a bit mean with flies about.

My only suggestion would be to furminate every day, it really does get the hair out. We use one on a grey that ha a beautiful dappled summer coat that I refuse to clip, but would be a wooly bear if I did nothing about it :)

Well you can only clip and rug or not clip and not rug. Perhaps try a different fly rug. I've got a PE bug buster on my D who has a long mane and it was damaged before I got her but has not been affected by using it 24/7, and an amigo Aussie allrounder on my cob who is hogged but it doesn't rub her either and has a silky mane guard built in, she also wears that 24/7.

Cotton 'flag' rugs are the go for keeping the harsh summer sun off. With summer temps getting into the 40 degrees and up, the sun is so harsh that it's cooler to have a barrier between your skin and the sun. The flag rugs are super light, soft and keep the sun off, but also breathe well. I've found synthetic fly rugs too hot in summer. If your boy is struggling, perhaps a lighter cotton rug could be the go?

I clip all year round. She is in during the day currently but clipped her and left her out last year with no problems. She does have a fly rug but tbh I only use it when the flies are really bad, it's a swish rug and is great and doesn't rub.

This is her fully clipped and looking disgustingly fat.

I'm in the same boat and clipped 2 days ago! I did a full but left his legs on.
Personally I've had no problems with him going out unrugged in the sun - I would ideally have him out overnight, but the yard won't allow this! He's a grey with completely dark skin though, so I think this helps re sunburn?
I've plastered him in a good fly repellent every day as well, and so far haven't had a problem with nasty flies.. He's just all round so much better for it, He was absolutely sweltering before!

I clip my mare all year round, and she has a fly rug on when turnout out.
I clipped her yesterday infact, although said clippers gave up half way through the clip..! 🙄

Mines having a blanket clip on monday, would have been sooner if my friends clippers hadn't broken. Possibly not very conventional but she didn't need a full clip in winter and she lives out and is skewbald so I didn't want to have to start rugging if I could help it and if the weather turns it means she still has some protection. She really is a hairy yeti!

I used to clip all year round, fly rug when the days were bad 70g lightweight for the rain as she just sweated and shivered in a rain sheet  worked for us she was happy and I was happy :)

Thanks guys. I have purchased an equigroomer to help with the shedding which haa worked quite well, so I'm hoping to hold off little longer as he burns so easily. He's been caught with the sun on his nose the past couple of days in between rain showersponsored and was determined to rub it in our lesson today. Even in trot! He just decided he'd did some odd version of Spanish walk!!
