My whippetty thing was born in April 2021, so he had a lovely summer, warm, sunny, lush. Autumn came, it got darker, wetter, colder… Rew stayed in thank you very much. He is not interested in the great outside unless seriously encouraged - didn’t go out for a wee until 11am the other day, has tremendous bladder strength! He’s still happy to go out to agility, or in the car and then a walk, but his enthusiasm has definitely waned.C616B53D-1AE7-459C-A441-1839FF244DEA.jpeg

Have any of you noticed that dogs born into summer or winter etc respond to the seasons in different ways?

Willow, the dog in my profile pic, was born in Northern Idaho in late October 2009, she came home to me in Minnesota late January 2010, so in her mind the world was cold and snowy, I had the fun of potty training her twice because she refused to pee on grass once the snow melted that first spring. She loved snow and cold weather her whole life and always sulked when the spring melt started.

Fizz was born in March and is very much like Rew. She can go 18+ hours without going out if she needs to, will not go for walks and even stopped under the event shelter mid race once at a flyball competition. She gets faster over the summer where others struggle with the heat.

Dobby was born in October and is less bothered, doesn't want coats unless it's really dire etc. He really struggles with the heat and has had near misses with heat stroke a few times. I'd never put two and two together about when they were born.

Mine have all been winter pups except 1, who was august born.

every single one was desperate to go out no matter what the weather. Walks are not negotiable regardless of weather conditions. The old boy doesn’t really want to ‘help’ in the garden as much for hours like he used to, but definitely not put off actually going. I suspect it’s breed that makes a difference, as mine are all GSD with thick double coats. If I had a fine coat I might think twice!

Bear and Zak were summer puppies. We joke that Near went for a wee yesterday so he doesn’t need to go for one today. The door is always open so I think he was confident that he could out when he wanted, he doesn’t worry. Current pups are winter boys. Mitch likes his comforts and refuses to go out for wees if it’s raining. We’ve had to take him down the road to make him go. Going for walks is a different case!

Mine was born in May this year. She is definitely a lot cuddlier now it’s getting cold but she has got over refusing to go for walks in the rain. She does have to be encouraged to go in the garden if it’s raining and there’s no messing around tormenting my plants. She still has quite a puppyish coat but I suspect when she gets her proper adult coat, my plants will be in danger all year round.
