Hello everyone,

I'm having a bit of a nightmare with rugs this summer and yet again have made the wrong choice and she has fly rug on today. The 6am forecast looked OK but it has poured down all day and I'm feeling so guilty. I need to rug my girl up every day when shes out really as she has terrible reactions to fly bites. Ideally on a day like today I'd prefer no rug as its mild and wet but if it stops raining and the flies come out she'll just come in covered in bites. Shes probably cold today as the fly rug will be sticking to her and I'm desperately waiting for my mum to get her in as she brings her in for me. Shes 25 now so does get colder than usual but if she has an ordinary lightweight turnout on shes boiling hot. This is what I've tried so far:

- horseware waterproof fly sheet - I found this completely useless, it slipped right off her dangerously and I wouldn't use again!

- bucas sunshower rug - I bought this thinking it was fully waterproof, however it only appears to be showerproof so is no good for what I want as need 100% waterproof. Also it said suitable to wear up to 20C (or was it 23C), either way my girl was completely boiling in it even if only 14 - 15 C

The lightweight rug I have at the moment is a horseware rambo supreme with no filling but the other day she was sweating in this and I felt really guilty about that aswell.

I'm desperate to find a lightweight summer rug that she won't overheat in (but don't know if they exist!) that will not leak. I had been looking at the shires performance maxi flow waterproof fly rug but am wondering if this will really be 100% waterproof or will I just find myself in the same position as with the bucas sunshower. Also wondering if I re-proof the bucas sunshower could it become more waterproof? It did seem more waterproof when I first got it and even though I don't think suitable for her at the temperatures thay say it may be the best option.

Any advice would be appreciated as I don't know what to get her!

Shes also very wide chested so restricted to certain makes. The bucas didn't fit aswell as the horseware. Just wish horseware would make a super lightweight rug in a lighter colour as they are the best fit. We tried an amigo that didn't fit her at all.

Thanks everyone! I'm hoping to make myself feel better typing this instead of looking out at the pouring rain and worrying about her as I can't get her in.

This weather is a real pain!
I have a real nancy TB who hates rain with a passion but gets too hot if i rug him
I tried the shires maxi flow which did prove to be showerproof but horse got too hot in it so no good.
Sorry not much help as i haven't found anything that copes in this :(

Hi I have just invested in a weatherbetta waterproof fly rug was expensive but it fits well and it keeps the nasty little critters away.

I have two Kadence (Countrywide own brand) LW T/O rugs that are mesh lined, they stand up to rain and on a hot hot day they get a little warm, but on a daily basis the mesh lining allows air to flow better than a nylon or cotton lining.

I think Jumpers Horse Line may also do them.

I think shires do a really good waterproof fly rug.

I put my fly sheet on with a very light rainsheet on top. Or you could get a rainsheet with d rings and buy a fly neck cover?

I bought the amigo lightweight turnout for my Arab an hes been living in that all summer so far because of the rain! Its been perfect, never too hot an fits perfect so no leaks would definitely recommend them :)

I found the same thing my my old welshie that needed a fly rug but I felt awful about him being out in the rain when I made the wrong decision, I bought the Shires waterproof fly rug and it solved my worrying!!
