Hi Everyone,

I have a 15hh (large) gypsy vanner cob, he has a big body, long back, big shoulder a cresty neck but very short legs! He is a 6ft 3in in a rug. I am looking for a middle price range, no fill, decent summer turnout rug up to £60.00. He currently has a weatherbeater freestyle from a few years ago but I ve discovered its leaking today and thought I would just get another the same, however it seems they don't make them anymore!
He has a Masta Astex 6ft 3inch heavyweight rug for winter with shoulder gussets that fits well but I heard the Masta Zing summer turnout is very tight on the shoulders. He had a Fal Pro summer weight one that fitted beautifully, but that died last year after about 8 years use.
I found the Amigo Mio too tight, and of course the Rambo and Fal Pros are perfect, but mostly far too expensive for me these days.

So has anyone got any recommendations for a rug to suit these types of horses, that is also hardwearing as he lives out with my 5 year old and they play hard!

I'm just beign nosy here... sorry! ... where in country are you? Very few of the chunkier types near where I am are in turnouts now. Are you somewhere cold?

Jasper has an Amigo 1200d with no fill that fits him wonderfully, although he is usually a 6'3" and he takes a 6'6" in Amigo, so you might need a size larger than usual. It seems tough and doesn't leak (touch wood!).

Tickles - Although he is chunky type, and doesn't need a rug on per-se at this time of year, I sometimes will put a light weight on him if its tipping it down with rain and I want to ride him later the same day, just to keep his back dry!

If needed I use a Premier Equine on our traddy cob. He is clipped all year as he is a very hot horse so may have a turnout on if it is very wet. These rugs are cut quite deep but a lot of that is taken up with his cobby body. They have some "not quite perfect" offers at the moment which I have bought before and have been hard pressed to find a fault (usually just a bit of wonky stitching). The fly rugs are also a really good fit for cobby types.

Was also going to say you can get the old one cleaned and re-proofed but was beaten to it ;)! My last horse was similar in build to yours from the sound of it and took the same size rug, I sold them all but did find the weatherbeeta style of rugs always fitted him best!

JustJasper, thank you, that makes sense :-) The chunkies on current yard in mainly in the (semi-)retired and/or stabled overnight categories so keeping dry not an issue. I live and learn :-)

I need a lightweight rug as he lives out and we are having torrential rain and high winds in the Highlands and I only have a field shelter in one field, the one they are not using atm, also to keep the midges off them, but a standard fly rug is not waterproof so I ve found them both soaked in these after heavy rain, and pretty miserable.
Thanks for all your advice, I ve ordered a Premier Equine rug now.

By the way I have an Amigo Mio 6ft 3inch for sale £20 (200gm fill) - its brand new but got filthy on my cob, all sweaty so its been washed, but NOT reproofed it didnt fit him well enough (too small) if anyones interested, pm me.

Have just ordered a Ruggles lightweight for my girlie who is chunky so hopefully they fit that sort.
£36 AND 1200D Too:D

Too late now as you've ordered, but the Rambo Xcel is made for the big horses with thick necks and shoulders. I've had a L/W and a M/W for about 5 years and still going strong. My lad is clipped and lives out all year round, though our weather is generally mild enough for him to be unrugged.

For protection against sunburn and midges on hot dry days, the Koolkat Combo with mesh sides is a good fit too, and helps keep him cool.

I have a mark Todd for my vanner, you need to get a size up but i have been very pleased with it.

Please can you send those of us in Kent some of your rain.......none hear for months. :(
