Summer and Maggie are having their first night in tonight and meeting the neighbours! They are very messy with their hay when would you feed a youngster with a haynet? or is it best to avoid it.

My yearling is about 18 months old and she is on a haynet although I don't think its recommended by some as they say they are supposed to be eating from the floor but I don't know how accurate this is. Someone will have better knowledge than me about it.

Please don't use haynets with youngsters. IMO they are an accident waiting to happen AND they put far too much pressure on a youngsters poll - think how they use a haynet and they actually 'lift + pull' the net to eat, not good on a developing baby to lift that weight with their head/neck.

If you can't cope with the mess and waste then create a feeder in the corner (like the haybar) - I have seen others on this forum make their own from sturdy timber so cheape than a bought version.

PS Love the first photo! Mine would have freaked I think!!

Please don't use haynets! apart from the risk of youngsters getting tangled up in them it also makes them develop muscle on the underside of their neck rather than their topline which isn't a good thing as well as various other physical problems it can cause...

if th are particularly messy... try getting a couple of the huge tubtrugs and putting the hay in there... it's amazing how much they hold and they can really cut down on the mess... untill baby discovers that tubtrugs make good toys that is ;)

I would never ever have a haynet near a baby - especially one of Summer's age.....they are just too dangerous. I try not to use them at all except where I must but having seen horses hanging from them by their front legs, etc I am very much against them so I would maybe rather look at something like the Haybars or something if they are that messy.

thanks for replies hopefully builder will make haybar tomorrow I used something called stockboard in the other stable. Yes i think stable is big anough for one as that is the lounge they also have a bedroom!
