Summer Weight Loss Camp 2018

Another that seems to be stuck here but at least there’s no weight gain. Trying to judge how much to strip his track is tricky as it’s scorched and bare looking but he’s eating everything! The marshy grass, weeds, the lot, which is a worry as he is colic prone if restricted too much so probably being too generous. Still in during the day with soaked hay and now only having a token feed with supplements after being ridden. The concrete ground has scuppered any fast work as his splint has flared up, so restricted to walk now unless I travel out to all weather surface rides or the beach. I can only use the school at the yard once a week due to PSD. Frustrated and already stressing about grass flushing when it rains! Horses eh?

We're still not into the planned getting fit not fat work regime due to needing to quarantine them at the new yard which I hadn't planned for. They didn't have anything but just normal biosecurity procedure which is great... Just never had to do it before so hadn't expected it. We still worked her but it was limited.

Now Granny is over attached to The Beast too despite being in a paddock next to others now and is kicking up a fuss when we take her out and I've lost my confidence of getting The Beast out working by myself. So we are doing what we can and I'm hoping that in a week or two everyone, including me, has just calmed the beep down so we can stop being silly and get on. Having said that she lost some weight on the journey and then the quarantine paddock ended up nicely bare so she was down at 656kg when I measured her last. But their new paddock is definitely not bare so I expect some weight gain for a bit now.

I do think the grass is less rich than at previous yard and they seem to move about a bit more as they are less settled too! So hoping that helps a little.

We got down to 550kg when a new gelding went in the field next door and the fat appaloosa spent more time flirting than eating. Unfortunately her boyfriend got a bit stressed around her (must be that big white bottom she shows off) so he had to move and now we're back to eating and snoozing all day. Paddock pretty much a dry lot now, but she's pulling up the mains-wired fencing to get to the rested bit when she's bored. Also bloating a lot in this heat and was 570kg on the weigh tape last night. I can feel ribs and her crest is wobbling, so I think [hope] its bloat rather than 20kg of blubber back on.

Hot weather unhelpful for exercise as she has anhidrosis so having to be careful not to overheat her.

My boys weight loss is at a go slow, we were reducing nicely (embarrassed to see where we started if I’m honest!) but it’s slowed down the last week.
I havent been able to ride much as it’s just to hot in the evenings. Pleased he hasn’t put back on :)

First weight loss since May according to my weigh tape last night 😃 still not getting to do as much exercise as I’d like so think it’s a combination of stunted grass growth with the long dry spell and the introduction of his Haygain Forager! Ok I admit it - had one too many proseccos at Bolesworth and bought one 😳 so far I’m more impressed with it than he is lol but it’s really slowing down his intake when stabled.
Been so busy noting weigh tape measurements (in cm) I hadn’t noticed how close we’re getting to goal weight. According to the tape we only have another 15k to lose so roughly 65k lost so far (started diet Oct last year) Hoping that will see the last of his fatpads go and we can retest for EMS, my aim is to reverse his insulin dysregulation. It’s a long hard slog! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Mine has got fat again since moving from the quarantine paddock which was nicely eaten down. I'm not sure I dare weightape to be honest! But we have begun hacking again and as my confidence grows and her feet continue to improve we should be able to start getting out more and more. There's a fab beach within hacking distance so we're going to start some canter work asap too.
