what do you use to prevent a pink nosed horse getting sun burn? or what do you do if your pink nosed horse has sun burn

my pink nosed cob had factor 50 sun cream put on twice a day but still has sun burn and is loosing hair off his nose.

Loads of Factor 50 - I use a toddler one that is waterproof and an Equilibrium Muzzle Protector - even when hacking.

Sudocrem if that all fails and she does get burnt. Also no day turnout. She goes out at night time and has a stable with a huge overhang so she is in the shade even when hanging her head over the door.

Both of mine get the highest factor sun cream on that i can get at a reasonable price. They were really funny a couple of years ago when there was an offer on the kids green stuff.

I also put full face fly masks on and that gives them quite a bit of protection. I haven't had to deal with burnt noses for some years, but i used sudocreme and it soothed it really well.
I have used sodocreme as a barrier also when out of sun cream and it worked well.
Make sure you dry their noses really well before putting either on or it doesn't stick.

I use an Equilibrium nose sun guard for my horse, with no suncream as she is sensitive to it and it makes the hair fall out. She has no sunburn whatsoever, I also put an overreach boot on her white foot to stop the backs of her heal from burning. I think that once a nose is sunburnt, putting more suncream on it makes it sore, so as said, Sudocrem is the best answer, and keep out of the sun until it heals.

I second the factor 50 - but it must be total block. E45 do an excellent one. I've found, though, that the cream itself does cause a loss of hair.

Also, second the sudocreme.

I swear by zinc and castor oil cream for pink noses. You can get it in Boots, supermarkets etc in the baby section and is a couple of pounds for a big tub. A really generous layer prevents sunburn and is also good for healing a burnt nose. Cheap and cheerful!

factor 50 sun cream make sure it is water proof and uva and uvb protect and ater the sun has gone in i put aloe vera jelly to help soothe it!
