Looking for recommendations for Sunblock that doesn’t come off easily.

My horse has a pink nose and is really badly affected by the sun (I know I’m a bit prem with this worry as there is no sun yet 😂)

I’m looking for a sun block or cream that stays on. She will be turned out for most of the time in summer and come in for a few hours in the afternoons when it’s hot for some respite from the sun. She’s on livery so I need to get the yard to apply whatever she has to have put on however I’ve used Filtabac in the past and unless it is put on consistently, without fail every day before she is turned out it rubs off and ultimately she gets a burnt little nose.

She won’t wear a mask - have though perhaps a field safe head collar and a nose net could help. Open to suggestions please 🙏🏼

I had a pink nosed gelding and found a nose net was the most useful. Everything else inevitably does rub off as they graze, groom etc. But as long as you make sure it's had time to soak in there should be enough protection. Otherwise I used to use H&B mineral sunscreen which is ridiculously thick. Or one of the all day ones which don't need to be sitting on the skin for protection.

I've always used filtabac, you do need to put it on every day.

Its a mineral sunblock so I guess you could try a chemical one instead? I'm not aware of any for animals so it's have to be a human one and try it with caution.

Have you tried the sticks of sunblock that surfers and skiers use? Though if Filtabac comes off I'm guessing most creams will too.
No, I haven’t tried anything other than Filtabac yet (apart from masks that were all destroyed sometimes in less than 5 mins!)

I have always requested it to be put on every day however I know some days it is forgotten and she ends up burnt. As I can’t be there every day I’m trying to get something that if it’s forgotten for a day it won’t end up doing her more harm than good.

I think it's unlikely you'll find something that lasts more than a day tbh, particularly when it can be grazed/groomed/rubbed off by the horse just being a horse.

My old boy had a big pink nose and I too found that Filtabac stayed put the longest but it still needed to be every day. I did find though that I could put it on in the late evening and it would be ok for the following day. The more you apply it, the more it seems to build up a covering by sitting in wrinkles and building up from there!

I use the Lillidale Sunblock 4 Animals on my white faced mare. Its a power so doesn't annoy them when putting it on and it's not perfumed. Been really impressed using it for the last year.

This may sound odd, but look up Sol Plus by Hippo Health. It's a homeopathic remedy that you either give orally or put into the water trough, and helps to prevent sunburn. I gave it a go as I had the same issues with sunscreen not lasting even half a day, and he would manage to remove or break any fly veils I put on him. It's been a few weeks and here in the harsh Australian sun, he hasn't gotten burnt since! No more messing about with sunscreen or trudging through paddocks to find lost fly veils.

Only thing is they are based on New Zealand, but if you can afford the shipping, give it a go! The cost of the product itself is really economical.

Hi! I highly recommend trying Stasis Cosmetics Natural Sunblock, sold here https://stasiscosmetics.com/collections/deodorant/products/sunscreen - it won't budge and made from ethical, natural ingredients. Pasted them below:

Ingredients
Organic Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Organic Cacao Seed Butter, Organic Sea Buckthorn Oil, Vitamin E, Organic Aloe, Hyaluronic Serum, Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, Coco Caprylate (naturally derived).

I use this on myself (extremely fair skinned and freckle easily). I also use it on my horses - and because of the placement of it being so close to their mouths, it gives me peace of mind knowing it is safe for them if they accidentally ingest traces of it during grazing. We are at a higher elevation and have very long days in the summer, also in a arid climate. The owner of this company also recently made me a prototype for Thrush to try out for my Friesian (with the deepest collateral grooves). His father is a veterinarian and he is a biochemist. So he understands the unique qualities and needs of a horse person!

Hope you try it out! It's a game changer!

Also, the main ingredient of Filtabac is titanium dioxide, which is known to have genotoxic properties - meaning it changes the genetic make up of cells, causing them to mutate. TiO2 is also poisonous and not safe to ingest (even though it's put in candy and chewing gum). I'd recommend staying away from products with this ingredient.

No matter which product you decide to use, look for one with - Non-nano zinc oxide. It is safer and blocks harmful UV rays.
