Sunburn and Horses

I buy the thickest stuff i can get with the highest factor, just human stuff. I have also used sudacrem which works well as it is so thick and waterproof. I also use a full fly mask with the nose cover which is a big help. Mine hasn't had sunburn since i got her 7 years ago. She stands like a wee angel to get it on.
Maybe it is more to do with photosensitisation if your cream isn't helping. I think buttercups, st johns wort, clover and cow parsley can be a factor in this. The substances in them can be absorbed into his muzzle when he is grazing.

If you find something let me know please!

I use factor 50 too and it doesn't help much at all, I have given up and just bring the pink skinned horses in by day now - much to their relief.

Star was badly nose burnt 2 yrs ago when I bought her, she has a good brand factor 50 absolutely smothered on and has a field safe headcollar with a nose screen attached, *touches wood* haven't had a problem yet:)

My ned usually gets terrible sunburn on his nose - think horrible sunburned blisters. So this year I started early, bought some Naf horse suncream which, upon opening, turned out to basically be Sudocrem (smells like it at any rate!). It's really thick, so I cake it on, then apply a thinner factor 50 human sunscreen to get any missed bits. Overkill? Maybe, but, touch wood, he hasn't been burned yet this year!

P20 (I think that's what it's called) works brilliantly, it is expensive but you only have to apply once a day and I've found it's the only suncream that sticks and works.

The only other thing I used to use was the full face Cashel flymasks with the UV protection nose covers.

My old boy sometimes used to get a reaction similar to sunburn but from certain types of plants (not only the normal culprits like cow parsley or buttercup) so that's worth thinking about too if the sunblock isn't working.

Why not try the coloured surfer specialized creams, it will look strange but it will work Have a look in a sports shop. Bull Frog is the best used, if you can get it! Also try putting on a base cream or light lotion, say neutrogena, then follow on top with a sunstick, say from shisheido (department store jobby) the brown one is best.

I have tried quite a few, the best one so far as been vitalize 50 from Wilkinsons. It is easily absorbed which seems to work better than the type that just sit on top of the skin.

You can get UV nose nets or masks, like flymasks. I've never had one so can't recommend any, but friend just bought one and says it's helped alot.

Hi,
I have to use suncream on my horses due to pink noses...I tried suncream but found it came off too quick and especially after my Clydesdale learnt if he rubbed his nose on the grass or his field friends bum it would come off!!!

So i bought the sun sticks. They are meant for kids so they are high factors (30, 50+) they are thicker than suncream (more waxy) and easy to apply as a quick wipe with the stick goes a long way and they are waterproof so won't come off as soon as they have a drink.

You can get them in white/clear but just for a laugh i get the coloured ones!! I have a green one, pink and a blue one!!! Not only do i get a giggle in the morning it's also really handy to see if i have missed any bits.

My field is next to the hacking track in the fields and people hacking in the afternoon have commented that my horse has a blue nose, so at least i know they last into the afternoon!!!

They are also quite cheap compared to suncream, normally about £1.99. They have them in supermarkets but i buy them off Ebay...cheap as chips and no more peeling or sore noses :

mine suffers so has to wear a face mask all summer.

He had suncream on the other day underneath, but took his mask off somehow, and still got a bit of a crispy nose.

Im defo gonna try the sudo cream instead.

sudocrem - its cheap and its brill - only problem is my horse hates anything on her nose (apart from horse feed of course) so I have to catch her by surprise....sometimes I end up wearing more!!

I use the UV protection full head net and that works really well when the youngster doesn't pull it off him!

My mare has a big white blaze and a pink nose. I have had her for 3 summers now and have finally found a combination that works. She wears a full face ( cashel crusader) fly mask with ears and nose, this prevents a good 85/90% sunburn on her nose ( make sure it is on the longer rather than shorter side) and then in the evening when I take the mask off I smoother her nose in sudocream, same with her white heels allthough I smoother them first thing.

I have tried every sunblock on the market and this is the only regime that works for her.

The best stuff that I've found is Barrier Hygiene Sunburn Soother. It's not too thick, so my girl doesn't try and rub it off like most products.

I use 'Sun Guard' on my WB's nose. Its quite thick and white and seems to work well, oh and it smells coconutty! I get it from my tack shop, its in a white pot with a gold label.

My present two and last two have very large pink noses. I don't use any cream, but they wear/wore Cashel crusader masks with the nose covers. They wear them 23 x 7 during the summer months and their noses stay perfect pink and kissable with no scabs or burns.

At shows, I use a high factor cream for when they are in the ring and will take their masks for when standing around.

My boy had jsut developed sunburn this year - never had it before - and I have started using this Banana Boat kids stuff. Its waterproof and is hopefulyl working. Problem is that I only get out ot see him 2 times a week and his sharer isnt pulling hwe weight so there is no one to put it on the other times :(. And he wont have a mask on.

Equilibrium make a field relief muzzle protector, which I have used on my pink nosed horses for several years with no sun burn problems.
One of mine absolutely refuses to have sun block on her nose.
