I have a horse with a white face who in this weather constantly gets burnt all round her nose. I have tried suncream (for us) which costs a fortune in the end and have masks on but nothing protects her for a whole day.
Any suggestions on products i could use?

Get her out of the sun completly and only turn out at night??

Does snuggy hoods have a solution?? Iknow there are a few people on here that have problems with sunburn, mine gets it bad over her muzzle. But shes been wearing a equilbrium UV protector which for her makes it worse (she rubs it) but recently shes been wearing a muzzle (Shes fat) and shes not had any sun burn or rub marks.

well i have been doing that but she has sore legs so is not good for her to be in standing all day and well she loves to be out with her friends. Yeah i tried all the masks and none are any good just didnt know if there was any good "tried and tested" creams.

Nivea Sun spray. My mare is soo fragile in the sun and this stuff is great. Blue bottle available boots or asda and lasts ages.

that is the one i use! I used it the other day and she burn't badly my friend told me that they think it was that sunblock that may have actually burnt her skin so now i am scared to use it. Awwwww it is so hard do they actually do a horsey suncream although i guess it costs a fortune and probably the same as our's!

Nivea doesn't work well for mine - it has taken all the hair off his face as far up as the noseband and while it isn't burnt, it is very pink and tender looking.

NAF do a horsey suncream:

Unfortunately it's not a big pot, but it is cheaper than most human sunscreens. I haven't tried it yet because I got some Nivea suncream on a deal, which works on my boys pink nose.
That plus his fly mask with added nose shield.

Supposedly it's quite good though.

Slap on Sudocreme. I put it on in the morning and it offers protection all day. Even if you get caught out one sunny morning and forget to use it, put the stuff on that night and overnight the burnt bits will become pink again. Obviously, if the nose is very badly burnt, it would need vet treatment, but for mild burns, it works very well.

I have two boys with very pink noses. I would also recommend Sudocreme. I started using it to soothe after they had got a bit toasted, but realised that it works really well as suncream. I'm often up in the morning to put it on, but it lasts all day. I don't just slap it on, I have their heads down and gently smooth it in (talking kindly to them because they aren't very keen and giving them a treat at the end!). I used to use P20, but I also wasn't sure if they were reacting a bit to it. I've also tried the sunburn soother/block stuff you get from tack shops, but they really hate that so I'm guessing it might sting?
The other thing to consider if the nose is looking really crispy is an allergy. I thought one of my boys was extra photosensitive due to buttercups, until we moved field and there weren't any. But, he would get really "burnt" when his friend didn't, with his whole nose getting sore and then with scabs that would rub off and leave him raw. Horrible, and I felt so bad because nothing worked to protect him. I contacted my holistic vet, Tim Couzens, and sent him some photos. He was certain it was an allergy and now Fin has a small bottle of white pills and starts to have them in his feed around February time and right through the summer. Touch wood, this is his second year without the soreness, so whatever is in the pills (homeopathy being rubbish or not!) - it works.

I use Soltan or Ambre Solaire factor 50 children's suntan lotion and he has never got sunburn. I think it is because he is now used to it, so no longer tries rubbing it off.

Instead of a human suncream you could put on zinc oxide cream which would act as a physical barrier to the sun. It is bloody difficult to get off too so would have the advantage that it won't have been wiped over the grass in 10 secs flat! It is the white stuff you see cricket players have in stripes on their faces to protect them. Will be cheap too.

I put sudocream on my mare's nose and she wears a fly mask with nose flap made by cashel crusader. Thease masks are expensive but I'm on the second year with it and it's still going strong. Any mask with a full nose flap should help greatly.

I've tried everything for my very pink nosed boy - equilibrium nose guard thing, expensive human suncream, expensive horse suncream, sudocream

suncream, sudocream is the work of the devil and was like putting oil on his nose. The only thing that I've found that works is leaving him out with absolutely nothing on his nose-yes he burnt a little bit initially, but like us, his skin got used to the sun.
