My welsh mare developed UV sensitivity a couple years back. As a result she can get sunburn like symptoms on her white socks. (yellow scabs that weep, treated with flamazine).

however i thought they could only get these scabs on pink skin? i.e under white hair?
i noticed today she has a scab on the white on the end of her nose, and this travels in scabs up to her eye. i picked them off and the skin under was a yellowy-pink colour in conjunction with her UV sensitivity. I put flamazine and her fly mask on (was angry to see later my sister took it off because she 'didnt need it on'. yes she does!!:mad:) so i hope that helps her heal. the majority of the scabs are on the brown hair and black skin though, so very confused.

sorry for the waffle, can you make sense of it ?:confused: i didn't think she could get scabs there.

My pony has a White face and the last few weeks have been the worst sunburn she's had in the 3 years I've owned her. It's funny you say it's on black skin tho.... Maybe it's an infection from the sunburn on her White skin? I used sudo creme and it cleared up in a few days. Hers was so bad basically her whole nose was just one huge scab.

Have you had a vet look at this? For a couple of years I thought one of mine was getting awful sunburn, scabby, sore, weepy and even bleeding. I also thought he had photosensitivity problems. I consulted my holistic vet, Tim Couzens, who pronounced it to be an allergy. Sent some white pills and it was gone very quickly. Now I give the pills from about February to June and it's never come back. I still need to use Sudocreme on his pink nose to protect him from sunburn, but this had been happening even when I did that and now he's fine.
Why do you pick the scabs incidentally? I would have thought it would be better to leave them on.

when the vet first came to look he declared photosensitivity (a few years back) so we have to pick the scabs off and apply flamazine until the scabs stop returning and the hair grows back.
wonder what the allergy could be if she has one..she's in a bare paddock and her photosensitivity only seems to come up if she has been on grass when it's quite a hot/sunny day.
