I have a horse new to the yard that has real bad sunburn on his nose. He is not the easiest horse to do but something needs putting on it. What is the best course of treatement for an already burnt nose!?
I have always put aftersun or aloe vera gel on an already burnt nose, just to try and take the sting off. If i haven't had any of these on the yard i've used sudocrem as well, anything that will make them a bit more comfortable.
Our 3yo's was very badly burnt, and think he'd been eating nettles too so he came in yday with a very sore bloody nose!
I've slopped it (I say slopped, it's more a thin layer but it's all over his nose and chin!) in Sudocrem and put him back out.
It's a case of keeping on top of getting cream on it, and poss investing in a fly/UV mask that covers the nose, which I'm in the process of doing now x
Thanks guys. I have just put a layer of factor 50 on and sudocream on his really sore bits. I'm getting him a uv mask today but I doubt he will keep it on for long. Either that or my horse will think its funny and pull it off x
if you have a badly burnt nose i would suggest you get the vet and run some bloods for liver function.! then go from there. some factor 50+ in the interim if the horse will let you.
Aloe vera gel is the best. Sudocrem if you haven't got some and will act as a sunblock to prevent any further burning. I keep ours in during the middle of the day to prevent burning and use factor 50 when they are out - realise that's not helpful after the event but I would certainly keep a sunburnt horse stabled until the soreness subsides (unless it is tipping with rain as it is here today!)
