Axel has a very pink nose and despite bringing him in during the day he has a very sore sunburnt nose now. He has a long nose flymask on and I plaster his nose in sudocrem when he comes in and when he goes back out again, but its still really sore and scabby and bleeding

Any suggestions?

He may be eating something in the field which is making him photosensitive. I think St. John's wort can have that effect. Sudocream won't stop him burning, sun screen works much better (get a sports one, as they are waterproof and needs to be quite a high factor 30+).

Put a good factor suncream on.
I think that as sudocrem is used as a barrier cream in humans, it may be oil based which is cooking neddies nose.
Someone will correct me if I am wrong, I am just guessing

Kids factor 50/60 suncream and apply lots of it - it'll be thicker so will stay on longer

Hasn't got buttercups in his field has he? Might notice some small bits of "sunburn" around fetlocks too if he has got buttercups

we had this problem about 3 weeks ago and it was really distressing. we put a muzzle on. we tried cows udder cream. we spent a bomb on equine sunblocks and all to no avail, the sunblock made him ten times worse to calling the vet stage. and what sorted it out?sudocream would you believe! sudocream on all night, equilibrium muzzle on all day if its not wet (otherwise it irritates like mad). good luck...

i use alovera (sp?) on my mares nose after shes been in the sun seems to help prevent the burn from delevolping and blistering

how this helps ...

I use Sudocreme and it takes out the soreness and acts as a sunblock. Put it on when I bring them in and when riding, use max factor kids sunbloick when turning out.
You aren't using out of date sunblock are you? I was using some old stuff without realising it and wondering whey it wasn't working.

Equine sun block is rubbish. I get baby sun lotion as it's high factor and doesn't irritate already burnt skin. My horse's nose is really badly burnt (I was putting horsey block on and it didn't do a thing) so she gets smothered in baby sun lotion in the morning (and lunchtime if I'm around), and aloe vera in the evening. The aloe vera works wonders in clearing up the existing burn, and the lotion prevents any more. I did have an Equilibrium Max fly mask but it was rubbing her (unrelated to the nose bit being on though), and although having the nose bit on really helped, the combination of baby sun lotion and aloe vera works really well too. Mine is out 24/7 as well, I'm not allowed to bring her in!

I have an equilibrium nose mask for mine - it attaches to the noseband of a headcollar and shades her nose - although she tends to be out at night during the summer she will be out 24/7 for a bit now and the mask will be on
