I went to Spain to work with horses for a month a few years ago and I seem to remember they put sunflower oil in the horses feed - has anyone ever heard of this and do you know if it is benefitial at all?

We feed it too. I think it's mainly just to give a bit of extra shine to their coat.

Oh darn, I used to do this before, went to get some from asda yesterday, got there and couldn't remember for the life of be whether it was sunflower or veg...I took a risk and got veg!Don't suppose it matters?

But yes, we did feed it just for extra condition and shine, hoping it will work on a seriously unconditioned mare.

I feed it too, sometimes use veg, but mainly use soya or corn oil but our asda doesnt always have soya or corn in hence why I often end up with sunflower or veg.

Ours have a splash, but not too much as it is very calorific and they are natives who get fat on air. It improves coats and I am sure it helps to some degree with mobility in older horses. Some people feed cod liver oil but I prefer to keep the horses' diet vegetarian.
