I have been recommended black sunflower seeds, you give them by the cupful, they're meant to make their hooves great, strong, even, etc.
Coat shine is a problem for a grey isn't it?I have always used oil of any veggie type, always works to make the coat shiny but you just can't see it as much in the greys...
I divide a mug of black sunflower seeds between two feeds - soak them with my speedibeet - I can't comment on foot strengthening as CB's are famous for strong feet, however I can confirm that Donk's coat really is exceptionally shiny!!

she has quite alot of veggie oil/sunflower oil in her feed atm , but this is to "lubricate" as such, her feed, as we tend to get coughs
and i dont like watering feed down, i think it gets rid of the flavour haha.

Ah I see, fortunately Im in the position to own an ID, never any issues where feed is concerned. P used to actually eat Cortaflex powder mixed with water, he loves "soup" the messier the better
Mine since having two small mugs a day have had their feet improve lots. This year Cairo did not have to have summer shoes on and Chancer (also barefoot) has not has so much as a chip out of them.
Prior to this, Cairo had to have shoes in summer and Chancer had some chips and cracks. Took about a year to really get the full effect.
Also gives a lovely coat and has plenty of protein, vits and minerals.
Sunflower seeds are great for feet. The cheapest way to buy them is as bird food!
If you are feeding lots of oil, you will have to watch it if feeding sunflower seeds too. Sunflower seeds are about 40-50% oil.
If you are feeding more than 1/4 a pint of oil a day you need to suplement selenium and vitamin e.
a 1/2 a lb of sunflower seeds will provide 1/4 a lb of fat. 1/4lb of fat = roughly 1/4 a pint of oil.
All good stuff, I feed my shire 2 pints (2lb) of oil/fat a day because he is epsm... Having a horse like this just makes you realise the importance of keeping an eye on all sources of fat/oil and selenium in the diet. It can get nasty if these things are unbalanced!
I knew about the coat getting shinnier...but had no idea it was good for their feet, But have noticed a HUGE differnece in his feet recently!!
He went barefoot in august because of the time off, and hasn't had them back on. His feet used to crack easily and we had to be very careful with shoes (more so than usual!) One time he had shoes on for 3 weeks and his feet started to crack
but since having them off and obviously feeding the sunflower seeds (we buy the cheapest - bird seeds!) they have become so clean and very good!!
A will also start Motty on them when she's at home, her feet are pretty bad too....but thats only because she hasn't seen a farrier in ages (imo!)
Is anyone aware of the content of them? I'd love to feed them to my neddy, but he is a lamanitic and has cushings so i'm a bit afraid incase it brings on an attack- has anyone with a lamanitic used them before???
