Who feeds sunflower seeds?

Are they good for their feet? My horse has good feet anyway but he is unshod so am thinking it can't hurt to perhaps add something to his feed that is as natural as sunflower seeds. (and my friends horse has terrible feet so whould like to suggest to her to)

How much should I feed? (he is 26 yr old 15hh cob)
...........and last silly question but where do you get them from, is it just the sunflower hearts or whole black seeds?

Is there any info on a website anywhere does anyone know?

I have not seen any difference but I still feed mine a mug a day in the summer & 2 in the winter. It is the black seeds that are used, & there are plenty on here that swear by them.

I feed a mug/cup full per day. This is the information I have:

"High-protein food, with more protein than the grains. Rich in minerals; iron and zinc are plentiful. The high amount of oil in sunflower seeds as polyunsaturated fats, essential linoleic acid, and vitamin E. They are about 25 percent protein, have a good fibre content, and are rich in the B vitamins also, particularly in thiamine, pyridoxine, niacin, and pantothenic acid. With their high potassium and low sodium and with zinc, iron, and calcium all at good levels, sunflower seeds are a very mineral-rich food. The vitamin D that gets stored in these sun-filled seeds helps the utilisation of calcium. Copper, manganese, and phosphorus levels are also relatively high; they are lower in magnesium than in calcium, which is different from other seeds. "

The thing is, with all these supplements, you don't know how the horse would be if you hadn't fed them! But my horse's feet are pretty good, and he is very shiny. So I will just keep feeding them. They are not expensive. I feed the black ones in their shells.

Its the BOSS ones you want, they are with the bird feed usually. I get a 12.5kg bag for £8 from Farmway.

My 17.3hh gets a mug and a half, 16.2hh gets a mug full.

Great for shiny coats and good hoof quality.
