He did retaliate but the first double barrell she caught him square on on his second thigh, nice round hoof print

So put plenty of arnica gel on it as it was warm and have some stuff here from the vets that is better for bruising that we'll take up this morning. So will obviously see how he is today but we were supposed to be going to Eland Lodge tomorrow to have a play XC do you think he will be ok or are we best not going?
Poor Sunny.................

Well I would not go but that is just me...just in case and to let the area heal a bit. I always go on the basis of what I would want to do activity wise if it were me that got kicked...and on that basis I would probably be a bit too tender for a few days. But I might be a softy!

Going to be a suck it and see. Our pony and my horse both got kicked out hunting last year by shod horses - one on the thigh and one on the side of his breast. Neither was lame or apparently sore. I would have expected mine to die

He may be very sore, but if it's only sore, I'd count my lucky chickens that he hasn't got a puncture wound

I'd have given him a bute but kept in mind the very slight risk of a bone injury?

Ha, silly me! I clean forgot - our pony (who got kicked on the thigh) kicked my horse (who got kicked on the chest) and made a puncture wound to his thigh! A cut less than an inch across - hossy was off for two months and I thought at one point the bone was infected. It wasn't, though
smile.gif
Was very annoyed at ponio who was probably just giving as good as he got, to be fair

A lucky escape and a very classic 'abscess ripening and bursting' scenario to demonstrate the body's remarkable healing capabilities.

thanks both

would you give him a couple days off or can he do light hacking?
Never had a horse whose been double barrelled before so sorry for coming across as thick

Poor boy, hope he's not too sore this morning. I probably wouldn't take him XC schooling. If he's sound or only slightly lame/stiff I wouldn't call the vet, but would just keep an eye on him.

My mare got kicked there in a lesson when she was on working livery at a equine college.

Unfortunately she was hoping lame and took 6weeks to come right (so obviously vet was called for her). Fortunately no break, just deep bruising.

On a separate note, can the yard not provide a safer way to bring your horses in?? Others have to come through my mares field, so I put up an electric fence gang way, to keep everyone safe. Nothing worst than trying to get through loose horses to get to the gateway (especially when they are horses that don't normally go out together).

I would be inclined to leave the XC and turn him out for the day and let me have a day off, then maybe just go for a light hack and see how he is.

I expect he would feel abit sore.

Agree with the above advice. Sorry forgot to say get vet if lameness severe or prolonged or greater than what you'd expect. When ours got kicked out hunting, we kept them moving, obviously, but they weren't immediately sore.

thanks everyone

Sunny was fine this morning when we got to the yard this morning, so treated area which was only slightly warmer than normal in one small spot so hopefully it wasn't bruised too much. Not lame as we trotted him up and when he went back in the field (brought them in to treat hindquarters and left in while poo picked - oh the joys of an early Saturday morning

) he romped off after Pidge and looked ok

Going to take him for an amble hack tonight to see how he is.
