Supastuds Travel Studs - essential kit. Anything else?

even better than cotton wool: foam tips for roll-up ciggies, soaked in wd40. they hold together better when you pull them out with a farrier's nail, and they're exactly the right size, squished in half and pushed in sideways.
top tip!
btw i don't smoke, was taught this years ago!

My farrier hates the super studs. Says too many folk dont bother tapping the hile out first then just keep cutting a new thread. eventually end up with no thread to hold the studs.
I do use them, but always tap out the night before.

Personal essential kit - jelly grooming mit - all you'll ever need to groom, remove mus and wash down.

where do you bu these cigarette things from?

any big cigarette counter e.g. at the supermarket. they're mega-cheap, about 40p for a couple of hundred last time i bought any, i think! you want the skinny thin ones, they're little foam tubes about 3mm across and about 6mm long. folded in half, they fit in sideways perfectly and expand again to fill the hole. they hold together much better than cotton wool, even if they've been in for weeks.

Just a point of information for your farrier, Hotellie: the ones he's talking about aren't SupaStuds (even if he thinks they are - lots of people get them muddled) they are self-tapping studs, several other companies make them. They are indeed a nightmare as they try to re-thread your hole everytime you screw them in so you are left with no thread, so he's right. However SupaStuds don't do this they don't have a cutting thread, just a cleaning one - it's a really important difference. At this point I have to admit I work part time for them and they sponsor my horses so I am a bit biased!!!

However, I already thought they were great before I started promoting them rather than the opposite way round

Of course like anything some people like them and others aren't as keen, so by and large I stay out of these debates, but I just didn't want people reading this thread to think they are self-tapping because they are not and we spend our lives trying to explain the difference!!

absolutely TableDancer, i don't have to re-tap at all, i just use the supastuds very carefully... make sure they're accurately lined up, which is really important (sometimes any stud will catch on the cross-thread, and it all goes wonky from there on), and then screw them in. never had a problem at all.

oh i dont think it was me that said about this...my farrier thinks supa studs are great. i think it was someone else. i also know about them being only self cleaning as i said this to someone elso on another thread...there is no way i could manage with self taping studs i would have too many lines to follow!!!

Oh just thought of my favourite things with studs
A handled spicked thing to get out cotton wool!!! so much better than nails (use to drive me mad!!!). Cost about 80p from local shop (supposed to be for leather work or something!!!), have since brought about 10 for friends who think they're great to!!!

Do you still tap your stud holes? I do, even with using the supastuds!

[/ QUOTE ]

Supastuds are not self tapping, they are self cleaning! So if your thread is a bit worn you may need to tap them. When the holes are new I find putting in a larger supastud before the one which is the right size helps, or before I put in a travel stud as I always put in the travel studs the night before.

I have wrecked the thread on one recently, in the dimness of the lorry it took me a week or so to notice unfortunately (cue lots of cursing when trying to force it in), but I can see now where the thread is mashed.

Treated myself to a few spares though the following week so I don't have any more panics.
