Do you go with one HUGE rug (like a 450gm full neck) or a Middle/Heavy and underrugs?

My nags are out at night and i'm getting more and more neurotic about them being cold. Probably got more to do with me being cold and my shoddy central heating than them being cold but heyho!

I wouldn't have thought it's cold enough, yet, to be worrying about 450g TO rugs.

But I do like the combo rugs where you can change the linings - which gives some layering and more optiosn.

However, I don't really like layer after layer - so would ideally go for just one rug or a rug with a liner.

I have rugs in both stable and t/o from no fill, 100, 200 and 300 weights. This means I can most of the time be fine with one rug, but if really cold can use the 100 and 300 to get a 400 rug. However, I only use that combination when it is below -4. They also have a fleece which is also on occasion used under the rugs when it is not quite cold enough for them to need the next weight up, ie they could do with a 150 or 250 weight.

It does mean I have a lot of rugs for two horses though.

Personally I would not buy a rug over 350 as the times I would use it would be little as though my two are fully clipped, they don't get that cold.

I think its got more to do with me being cold!

The dutch nutjob was looking very peacefull last night in her 325g TO with all the bells and whistles, she still got an underrug too and wasn't hot this morning (It did only get clipped on Sat though)

That said the cob in her field was naked and looking very pleased with life and not cold in the slightest!

mine has a 450gm full neck TO on at the mo - on bitter cold days she also has a fleece under that - once it gets down to -7ish or colder she'll have a full neck duvet too - she lives out 24/7 365 hunter clipped and fit so not an ounce of fat to shiver off.

oh and i'm way up norf - so this prob is relevent to anyone down saaaf ;)

Ah yes, can see why you would want the warmer rugs - especially being up north.

mines unclipped in a 180....! (combo)

i prefer layers..... so as it gets colder - she will have her 300g one on after christmas.... and a fleece underneath if its ded cold :)
