First up for the weekend was beach riding with Topaz and Doodle. Topaz was much calmer than my dotty old lady  but did manage to dump my mum in the sand :eek3:. All ok if a little sore...

Onto Sun and normally a run the day before is a good plan as it tires her out, but it had perhaps worked too well, Topaz said it was too sunny and she was too tired :o.

First up M75 and it all felt wibbly wibbly, but RELAXED :D. We got very good marks for walk lol. So we had softeness but not enough engagement, one day we will get both together! Our shoulder-ins were good, travers seemed like too much effort and the same with canter halfpass :o. So a rather generous but welcome regional q'ing score of just over 64% :), first in my section and second overall gaining some prize money even!

I then had had a think about the new AF structure this year and realised I was running out of time a little to decide what we should aim at. Plus in the quite near future mum might be moving Topaz with her on her new adventure in the wilds of Cheshire. Which might mean the end of my competing with her as it wouldn't be fair to only school once a week and still expect her to go out at this level.

So... Adv Med 85 :eek3:, a fairly simple medium test with two flying changes at the end. She was tired still so we just lacked the engagement to really get stuck in but the first part of the test went super with 7-8's for the trot and walk work. I 'may' have got a -2 for forgetting my blooming turn across at H :mad3: sack the jockey :o. Canter work was ok, we got 7's for our simple changes. Then the changes, the first I said change, Topaz was like nah you are def tricking me I'm never allowed to do this :o, but got there eventually. The second on the aids but described as 'a little bouncy', to finish with a decent canter halt on the final CL. 62% and an AF sheet  1st (of one shh Topaz thinks she's amazing lol) and fourth overall.

I'm very proud and next time will try not to tire her out quite so much the day before!

I'm not sure what to do about the lack of energy/ stamina... She is finally at a good weight after two years no hard feed and work, but she is definitely lacking a bit of the right sort of oomph, she's as sharp as a tac for the first 10/20 mins and then tired.com :o. Should we wait for the spring grass or give in and give her some feed? She could have a bit of chop/ grass nuts and a dash of linseed???

Forgot to add thank you for reading :)

ahh super well done and I'm mega jealous about the beach, I wish I lived close enough to one to have nice sunny rides :D Nice to see pics of Doodle and BAD TOPAZ! :D

Have you got a local AF coming up soon? I'm umming and ahhing about what to do, knowing it's not unrealistic to go and do a couple of AMs with K to squeeze into the AF at Hartpury end of Aug just for a laugh ;) but does that mean my Medium bronze AF sheets are useless and we should go out at silver to have the option of AM Bronze? Damn BD and the complicated rules, lol

Are oats an option for Topaz? Mine have very boring dinners most of the time of just grass chaff to carry their salt etc and then I pop in some oats when we need more pizzazz. It's hard with the good doers - I find K takes a lot of work to keep her fitness so she sometimes does stuff twice a day...

We're an hour or so from the beach but love going! Topaz was in trouble :o.

The first one is June, but wanted the option there if I still have the ride by then... You can do Medium bronze until you have 15 points at Adv Med so as you only need two 60+ sheets for AF, scope to do both? Though best to ask BD !

Hmm we're wary of cereals with her after the flaked cereal incident where she went bat***** crazy after a misplaced handful :eek3: :o. She's fairly fit, wasn't too blowy after the beach, manages Somerford farm ride easily enough, just loose umph when schooling... Physio is coming tomorrow to give her the once over so will have a chat with mum about feed and workload.

Does she get her electrolytes? I give mine a mix of salt and lo-salt most of the time but did buy K some proper ones last summer when she was properly sweating every day, I think that helped.

Will be a bummer to lose the ride at this stage, is that looking likely then? What a shame, but at least you've got Skylla on the BD conveyor belt now :)

What's next on their calendar?

(just re-checked rule book and it does say you can hold qualification for 2 consecutive levels at Bronze so, phew. We have 4 medium sheets in the bag already so will just keep plodding on :) )

Sounds like a great weekend (if a little naughty, Topaz...)!

We've not been to the beach in ages, the last time it was a miserable day and SO windy! So want to go on warm, sunny day.

She gets nothing but hay and carrots, we did try salt but she utterly refused to eat it :o. Might try her with the Pro Hoof balancer the other two are on, a dash of linseed for slow release energy and some grass nuts to hold it...

Well mum is moving the start of April, but has said Topaz can definitely stay until Hartpury is out of the way and then she'll see how she goes, they're building an extension and mum's got to work her commute out so a bit of time to settle in might give me a couple more months :(.

Going to get her booked in for two more mediums to try and crack on with regional scores and then the AF finals!! :eek3:

Plodding on  you're whizzing along nicely :).

It was just glorious on the beach, still a bit chilly but we had a top afternoon :).

Where is everyone :confused3:, maybe I should give up on these reports and stick to facebook these days?

However pictures from our Adv Med debut:

And because you can see why the judge had the comment "a little bouncy" for our second change :o

No kidding , think I need to work on sitting on my bum

I think HHO is a bit dead at the moment, the sun has come out but the eventers aren't doing their reports yet :o

yep she's got the flying element well and truly sorted, must have been talking with Millie!

Maybe us dressage peeps should bling up the world of facebook instead and leave HHO for the tweed wearers ;).

Yep flying check, change check, coordinated and controlled...erm :o

Thanks ljohnsonsj :)

ahh, well as one who is crossing back to the tweed side, part time, I can't go along with that ;)

You got any more dates with Skylla? Still aiming for Midway champs? I'm doing some long range planning... dangerous, I know

Traitor ;)

Not yet, concentrating on slowing her down more and getting her more consistent and will then dip our toes back in, though maybe the last judge was just being a touch grumpy :o, we have a while to get our Mid-way Q in so happy to go at her pace. She did the cutest baby shoulder-in last night, she just loves the lateral work plus we had another unwarranted flying change :o, think she wants to keep up with her big sister .

What are you planning?

think she wants to keep up with her big sister .

Got big shoes to fill! (or big hoofprints anyway).

Hmm it's all looking rather busy! There are about 5 AFs within travelling distance under this new regime... :o July/Aug goes mad with AFs, regionals, Welsh Champs etc... aaaaaand the Hartpury AF is immediately after Midway (like next day) so wondering if this is a major clash or if we should do both and hope she's not exhausted. Arghhhh! I need another-nother horse lol

That is busy, but you don't have to stay away for Midway and Hartpury so I say do both ;). Another-nother horse sounds like a fun adventure to me though, go on get that big warmblood you've always wanted :devilish:.

There are 4 AF's we could do but then that depends if Topaz is here, so I'm currently planning on Medium at regionals...

Skylla I'm not making any definite plans just yet .

pahahaha yeah right. Currently pulling out a pile of things to sell to cover the next lesson and entries... I'm def not in the "buying a new horse" financial universe

medium regionals def a good aim, Millie q'd 3 years in a row...and was instantly lame 3 years in a row, so I'd be living the medium dream through you there :D

I'm here! Love your girl. Love the bouncy changes and that she is coming along so well, although perhaps not bouncing in all the right places for you if she's a bit on the tired side. Too much excitement dumping your ma, did she get wet?!

What a shame if she's moving away though. You must be gutted. But will you still have the baby to play with?

Yeah I figure if we can get our qualification in then even if she's moved we can probably tootle along enough to go have a bash :).

Thankfully no she didn't get mum wet, though it might have been a softer landing! I think we might have to actually feed her :eek3:!

We're going to try and keep them together but I'm preparing for the worst :(, will be very sad :(. Yes baby Skylla is all mine so I'll have her to keep me busy at least :).

Congrats on the AM debut. Pics look fab - I especially love the one mid-change. ;)

My dad's old boy can be a little too laid back at shows so we've been thinking about giving him a little NAF EnerG gel before his class. It worked wonders on my last horse - a little too well, in fact. :o

It made me giggle lots that picture , we're not really ready for adv med but thought I'd be gutted if I missed my chance!

Hmm I fear I would just die if we gave her that :eek3: I'm thinking something slow release? Oats should work but we're chicken :o.

Don't give up your threads...I read and love them and find both you and millipops an inspiration! If I can ever get my own horse sound I promise I will put a thread up altho won't be as exciting as yours as we only pootle around unaff prelim rather inelegantly!

:D Thank you, and your thread would be just as exciting we all started somewhere! Though you can still find us on facebook :).

Congrats! Sounds like an exciting/busy few months ahead. Lovely photos, and she definitely gets full marks for expression in the changes!

Re feed - I second oats. They're not like other cereals and I haven't really found a horse that heats up on them as long as they're in a reasonable level of work.

Also - please keep doing your reports, I really enjoy reading them, and I don't do facebook....I find baby skylla fascinating - her breeding and the look of her, I would love to see how progresses

 I think we should have been rewarded for that change too :o we were very uphill...

I feed the other two oats but Topaz is so sensitive :eek3: but maybe we should give it a go? Ah thank you :o, I think baby Skylla should blossom into something quite nice and as she's very similar to Topaz in many ways I'm hoping she will prove me right :).

Sorry, I haven't been around much as very busy, haven't even had time to read reports recently, let alone reply.

Great pics, and I'm sorry that your mum's taking Topaz with her. I was also going to suggest oats, slow release and they have a not at all deserved bad rep.

Don't be sorry we all get busy :), I was just surprised how quiet it was :o.

Thank you for replying, ok maybe we will give oats a go :eek3: when I die I'm telling the doctors it's the good people of HHO's fault ;).

Great pics.

You do know it's a *flying* change right. No one else manages to get the flying bit - Topaz has nailed it! :D

Hope your Mum is ok. Wet sand is not a good landing!
