Izzy and I did our first graded endurance ride on Sunday so thought I would be brave and do a report.

Izzy was happy to see all the lovely grass at the event and was very relaxed eating while we waited for the pre-ride vetting. Had a heart rate of 36 and vet said he was in great shape.

The 33km ride had 29 gates so was very pleased that Trec pony is good at gates. The ride was at Findon on the South Downs so was very hilly but we are used to hills so didn't really slow us down. We cantered and trotted most of the way. Izzy was brave and led the way past scary fly tipping and a herd of cows milling about a gate.

Had great fun on the long canters but then my riding buddy came off when her horse spooked. She was fine but her horse was a right pain and it took 15 minutes to get back on.

Finished with a time of 2 hrs 37 mins at 12.61 km/hr. Vetting was fine and got a good heart rate of 42. And we got a Grade One so very happy with my supercob on our first competitive ride.

He was a little dehydrated when we got back so need to take speedibeet water to the next one to make sure he drinks plenty.

Fantastic day and we love endurance.

Nice to see another discipline get a look in! I am loving the cob, dont let me get anywhere near, I will be stowing in my trailer and taking home!!!!!!!

Super pics - and well done. I've done a few PR with my girly so far this year. She's been getting mega wound when we get back to the lorry to unpack so I'm a bit concerned if we do a CR that she will fail on heart rate at the end. Having said that maybe doubling the distance will wear her out a bit (wishful thinking me thinks!!) ;) lol

I just love your cob. :)

Good to hear you had fun and did so well. I'm still trying to do our first graded ride, hoping all will be well for Ulnes Walton a week on Sunday.

Thanks for your comments.

Just planning our next training ride. Riding with an Arab who does proper long rides so we will have a blast!:D

I think more people should do endurance. It is so much fun and such a great way to keep your horse fit.

What a great result! Excellent speed and heart rates (cough) especially for a cob.
I am a seasoned Treccie and do a bit of Endurance with our Trec club. We do the Riding Club Team Endurance qualifiers and did the final at the Red Dragon Ride in Wales last autumn. We don't usually have many gates to do, but our map reading experience certainly helps at some endurance rides where the route marking and "maps" are open to interpretation!!
Lovely to see cobs competing alongside the conventional Arabs.

Hi Tiga - now I know your HHO ID, I do believe that said Arab in above quote might just be something to do with me :-) See you Sunday!

You should compete at BRC Team Endurance!! See http://www.rcteamevent.endurancegb.co.uk/ for details. Its great fun :) Even my ex racers does rather well at it :)

We are! We are competing for Mid Sussex Riding CLub and I am the organising person. We had two teams in this ride and came 2nd by two points. Our other team came 4th. I am just figuring out the best strategy to get us to the finals! Not that I am competitive at all.:) We did this ride with an exracer and he also got a Grade one.

What a lovely horse :) would love to have a go myself but my horse would bronk me off as soon as I get going :(

On our first rides there was a lot of shouting from my friends along the lines of:

'Hang on and kick him on' as he bronced up the first few canters in excitement.

He is a lot better behaved now.

You should have a go.
