Hello - my 10 year old maxi cob has injured his sdft in a hind leg. He is just beginning the fifth week of 12 weeks box rest - being walked in hand twice a day ( increasing the amount of time every week). Just wondered if anyone on here has had a similar injury with their horse and what was the outcome (good or bad) Did the horse ever become sound enough to resume their previous level of work?

I've had 2 fore leg sdft injuries but not hind limb. Both of mine made good recoveries although the one with the worse injury did have a bowed tendon which caused an inflammation of the annular ligament when in hard work. She was fine with normal riding club type dressage and jumping.

We have had a few who have gone on to race again over jumps. So long as the tendon heals well, you take your time with the rehab and basically write off doing anything remotely fun for a year then after that your horse should be able to come back into the level of work it was previously in - slowly.

Yes it is a major injury BUT it's not the end of the world you just need to be careful from now on in and take your time.

I've got 2, the one who injured hers behind did come right but reinjured (both times in the field, playing silly beggars ?)

The other did a front leg under the pastern, she made a good recovery and vet was very optimistic about it, going forward. I am careful about surfaces and slippy going though and they are dressage horses so no jumping either.

Not hind but Minto damaged both front ones at the same time. Very very long recovery (21 months before treat as normal) as they were mashed. I did get him back to doing everything, jump, XC etc but I was very careful with surfaces. I got 12 years before one of them went again. We tried to fix it but it ruptured completely and he was pts that day.
