Some of you might be familiar with my trials and tribulations with my little Welshie!
And we've had (and still continue to have, more on that later) many issues and many arguments and many tack changes... BUT she showed me what a perfect little quirky superstar she can be and she only went and won her first mini hunter trial not weekend just been but weekend before that! In bleurgh weather after an eventful journey (road closures are the worst) after a week of gale-force wind resulting in little-to-no prep work for it.
Unfortunately I haven't bought the official photo's yet but here's some from her warm-up and after her round! Look at that little face:D

So now for the not-so-superstar bit..... she's now in season (thank god it wasn't the weekend of the show amiright)
And last time she was in season we hadn't got to jumping so I wasn't aware of what the ramifications are. Turns out my superstar pony does not like to jump while she's in season (I don't think she likes the stretch of it... does anyone else have this issue with their mares?) and she prefers to race for the jump and then pulls dirty stops and/or runs out. We had two sessions where the most we could do was pop a tiny straight bar and that was a battle, so we're sticking with dressage/flatwork sessions for the time being and hopefully by the time our jumping lesson comes around on Friday she'll be over the worst of it (and hopefully the Oestress will start having some effect....)
Ah the ups and downs of Welshie mares..... is it weird that I'm enjoying myself immensely with it all?!
 
.....well I'm proud of us at least ....

Still would like to know whether others people's mares have similar issues when in season though?
 
Does she do this every time in season? My mare could be funny jumping for her first and last season of the year but the rest was fine. If she's doing this every time then the seasons are obviously painful for her and it maybe worth getting the vet to scan her ovaries. But well done on the win!
 
Well done. Fab pics. If she is really struggling with seasons I am not sure Oestress is that effective? Have you discussed it with the vet. She may be bettter off with Regumate.

Usually they aren't this bad but as I said originally this is the first time she's been in a proper season since we started jumping regularly and it is her first proper season in a while.
If it is continuing when it comes to my lesson on Friday and if I ask my instructor to ride her and she's having the same issues, then at that point I may have a chat with the vet and see if Regumate might be an option for her.
I'm hoping it's just a case of her last season this year being particularly uncomfortable and she'll be back to normal soon but we'll see!

I don't know if they're irregular as such, but I've only had her a year so I'm not that familiar with her cycles yet. She had a full on season about this time last year, then nothing over winter, then an even more full-on season around late March-early April time this year, but after that she had what I call mini-seasons over the summer that had little-to-no effect on her work (though sometimes if a gelding showed interest while she was out and about she could be a pain to get back on the box!)

She's the first mare I've had though so I'm not sure if that's normal. Our other mare is an ex-broodmare TB and her seasons seem like my girls but just stronger!
 
Okay that sounds a pretty normal cycle. For my old mare (my young mare isn't bothered by seasons at all!) I used to just not do that much with her around her first and last season, I know if I'm on a bad period I don't want to do that much! Unlike gelding mares have all of their bits which means sometimes we have to take that into account, but if it's a real issue then I would consult a vet.

Well as long as it sounds normal that's a relief for me. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and let her do her slower work while she's 'on'
I know what you mean... my own periods can be hell on earth and if someone was trying to tell me to do hard exercise i think i'd pull out some dirty stops as well ;):p
