Please help can anyone reccomend a supplement that will give my mare a boost to her immune system, she has been suffering a really nasty cold for approx 3-4 weeks, sometimes a bit under the weather, but sometimes just plain snotty, quite thick and green at times too (sorry to be graphic) vet has now been a total of 3 times to her, took bloods on second visit and said it is viral and just has to pass through, one other concern is she is 7 months in foal so I have to bear that in mind, spoke to vet on phone again yesterday as I was worried again and he said to give her until Friday and if no better he'll come out again.

Any suggestions please to help her kick this off ?? thanks.

Echinacea is good for boosting the immune system, not sure if it suitable for pregnant mares or not though.

you could try Global Herbs, they do a supplement called Immuplus, I think it comes as a powder and a liquid that you add to the feed. We gave this to our boy after he came out of the RVC after 7 days of a serious virus, seemed to do the trick!

Propell plus is great for a pick me up when they are low or recovering from low immune system/illness.

I second Propell plus; it also contains Echinacea. My horse has been very very ill with Strangles and the Propell really picked him up

Just to say my boy was blood tested and the results came back as viral but it turned out he had a serious bacterial infection (strangles).

Having said that, there is no treatment other than good nursing anyway.

Simple Systems eclipse recovery. Don't think echinacea is suitable for pregant mares but may be wrong.

You could try a supplement called Equicell from a Company called Equiform - good stuff but it can get quite pricey if you have to use a loading dose to begin with. Also you would have to check with them if it's safe to feed to pregnant mares.

Thankyou for all the replies, ended up with vet again this afternoon as went to her after work at lunch time and was even more concerned she appeared very depressed, head hanging, coughing again and thick thick globs of snot just hanging out of her nose and falling to the ground, vet has come, once again taken temperature which was normal, listened to her chest again and said that there is a very slight gurgle in her chest so this time has given her a weeks course of antibiotics, have to call them back in a week if she is no beter, so another vet bill later and we'll see how she goes after that.
