19 yr old Sec b, fully retired and living out as much as possible, vet confirmed very slight constriction on his right side airways. As hes not in work and already on soaked hay and mostly living out she doesnt think its bad enough to need medicating but Im wondering if anyone can recommend a supplement that may just help a little. The only outward sign Id noticed was just slightly laboured breathing when I lead him in and out, hes well in himself and a happy little pony. As with all these things, there is so much to choose from and some ridiculously high prices to boot!!

I had very good results with RespirAid from Science Supplements after seeing a recommendation on here by Elf. My Connie can sound a bit wheezy when pollen is bad and coughs when ridden. I’ve had him on it the last two years with almost immediate success but haven’t given it to him this year and the difference has been very noticeable. There are smaller 10 day packs if you wanted to try it without paying out for a huge tub.

I've used this in the past with good results but often just adding vitamin E can be enough to aid breathing and works out cheaper, I actually feed a balancer that has the right dose of vitamin E in it and find its enough for my horse alongside soaking his hay through bad periods.

Respiraid DHA has some research behind it (it has VIt C, Vit E, MSM and Omega 3 oils in) but I think people have also found Naf Respirator Boost useful (it has MSM as it's key helpful ingredient). I think both are good but my vet suggested I try Respimin and for some reason that seems to work better than the other 2!

Always worth asking - what are you trying to achieve? And what might a supplement add to this? In all honesty I would probably be asking for a second opinion from the vet as there are medications specifically to help with e.g. allergies. Supplements are probably going to be an expensive waste of money-

Vit E and omega 3 anti-inflammatory oil from linseed/flaxseed would be my first choice nutrients to support respiratory conditions. It does depend what is the cause of the issue….dust, allergy, infection etc, as to what else i would do.

Mullein leaf has decongestant properties, used mainly for respiratory issues - but for that to be truly effective, it would need to be made into a cup of hot tea/decoction and liquid extract nebulised into the lungs. I’m not sure if feeding it as whole chopped dried herb would yield the same benefit as nebulising. Worth a google if others have had success with feeding it as herb, or tincture.

I liked Naf Respirator. I always used it with my old horse who had a nasty dust allergy.
Vet recommended Audevard Balsamic air which is also really good.

With several air related issues with my horses over the years. I found soaking not good enough even steaming my mare coughed.

Try chopped onions if he will eat them. They open the airways.
onions are Toxic to horses from the same family as garlic which is why I wont feed it.

Onions, garlic, leek, shallot and chive are from the Allium genus of plants, which are toxic to horses if ingested.
Wild garlic toxic horses
The plants contain propyl disulfide which can lead to the formation of oxygen free radicals that damage the membrane of red blood cells, causing cells to release haemoglobin.

The haemoglobin binds to the inside of the red blood cells and forms Heinz bodies. These damaged red blood cells are removed from circulation which causes the horse to become anemic; the specific condition is called Heinz hemolytic anemia.

I used to use Equine America before the RespirAid but they began putting garlic in everything which is why I changed. The RespirAid worked much better anyway and I haven’t touched the EA stuff since .
