My dressage horse is nice and forward in the winter but is quite lazy in the summer. I don't want to change his feed as this suits him very well and he does windsuck so I can't just 'add a few oats'. Does anyone recommend a simple supplement I can give him?

I would find out first why he is lazy.

I thought my mare was lazy/ tired for unknown reasons. So I put her on propell plus and oats. This was last April 2011

Long story in between

now 13 months later

still on box rest her 11th month .( came in july)

Turned out to be Laminitis. which started in April,

DONT up his corn or supplements till you rule these problems out please. I have had a stressful journey nearly loosing my mare on many occasions , rotation sinking abscess you name it.

Thanks for your advice Leviathan. It sounds like you have had a really bad time. I did quite a bit of investigation last year as it was the first full summer I had owned him but I will keep a close eye on him anyway as you can never be too careful!

What colour is he? Is he too warm? We used to have to clip my sister's horse in the summer as he was black and boiled.

Alternatively, is he allergic to something? pollen etc which might cause him to be sluggish?

He's a liver chestnut.

An allergy is possible. I think I will have a chat with my vet. Thank you for your help!

Same situation with my gelding. I fully clip him as he just does not do hot weather, gets very lethargic. He also has a scoop of Dodson & Horrell Microfeed per day as recommended by my Trainer and what a difference it made. I also think they just dont sleep the same when they are out 24/7 so keeping him in the night before a lesson also made a difference.

Just a few ideas of what works for me.

Thanks $ the ideas Izzwizz. He's actually in at night and has a big sleep(!). I'll check out the microfeed

We have been using Nupafeed staying power for our boy. Seems to have worked well. He is very laid back all year round though!

Hi my boy is lazy all year round I was recommended blue chip pro and it works wonders although a tad on the expensive side it's perks him up he's still lazy but it it makes him a bit sharper off the leg and it makes him look really good too x

Re allergies, is there a lot of rapeseed in the area, it is dreadful for horses, I was driving past some the other day and could feel it hit my own breathing [slight asthma].
Maybe needs a wee rest for a few weeks if been kept going over winter?

whats his routine has it changed since the winter is he turned out longer do you work him straight from the box tend to be bit fresher then or do you turnout first then ride when belly full off grass makes us all bit sluggish or is he just lacking vits and minerals hot weather tires them out more wheres a cold chill up there bottoms livens them up or maybe a blood test if you really worried could be lacking in some thing
